Melting Pot Food Tours

Posted by lasusie 2 April 2010

A guided walk with a difference, stopping at quality restaurants and specialist shops to sample food and beverages. Going places you would not find without the specialist local knowledge of the guide, being told the history of the areas as well as the food. This is the best guided 'tour' I have been on, unmissable, do not go to LA without booking on one of these, you will not be disappointed. Excellent value for money too!

Perfumeria Habana 1791

Posted by CoolandBright 26 March 2010

Old style perfumery where one can buy cologne and perfume with scents such as citrus, jasmine, rose, orange blossom, lavender and tobacco.
If you bring your own container you can purchase the scent for the bargain price of 0.20CUC per 10ml. If you want to splash out you can buy the scent in one of the ceramic perfume containers or bottles of varying sizes that make a nice present.

Dublin Flea Market

Posted by westbritmiss 26 March 2010

Buzzing and really cool flea market, packed with stalls with gorgeous vintage and second-hand clothes, chilled atmosphere, bands playing on stage, lovely food stalls and cafe area and wholefoods from the Dublin Food Co-op. Last Sunday every month.

Artisan market set in recently refurbished warehouse. Until November 2009 it was located in the streets around the Plaza de la Catedral.

Here you can find all sorts of interesting Cuban souvenirs including beautiful paintings, wonderful photographic prints, guayaberas (traditional shirt), woodwork, leather items, jewellery, painted ceramics and handcrafted cigar boxes (my personal favourite - the best ones can be found from an amiable man
in the centre of the market. He is quite passionate about them!).

Don't always pay what they first ask for. Haggle for a better price.

There are also food venues, money exchange facilities, public toilets and public phones.

Open every day including Sundays and holidays (except national Holidays or when the authorities declare special holidays) from 10am to 6pm.

Avenida del Puerto. Across from the Iglesia de San Francisco de Paula, corner of Calle Leonor Perez (Paula) and Calle San Pedro. 10 minute walk from Plaza San Francisco

What not to miss in Kochi

Posted by mitzyli 26 March 2010

Stay at the Old Harbour Hotel or the Malabar House (both are upscale and charming). Sip wine (or a beer) and nosh on small plates at Malabar House's Divine wine bar. Check out Jew Town, taking socks for the synagogue tour, watch the Chinese fishing nets at sunset, and indulge in a Kalari massage at Malabar House. And don't miss the chocolate cake at Kashi Art Cafe on Burgher Street

On production of your foreign passport (or copy of it) you will get a 10% discount off purchases at Macy's & Bloomingdales (excluding electronics & perfumes).
Ask any member of staff & they will tell you how to get the card.
In the respective stores you go to customer services to obtain the discount card which you present when making purchases.
This is not very openly advertised in store but every day 100s of people (if not thousands) obtain the discount card.

Designer shoes - Steve Madden

Posted by Fidge 8 March 2010

Steve Madden seems to be a shoe designer that you see everywhere in NY... However we found a Steve Madden shoe store that sold the shoes for a discount price - as low as $50 for two pairs.

Hokitika

Posted by sasuraibito 6 March 2010

A great place to break your trip down the West Coast. A beach with surreal driftwood "sculptures", local museum, lots of craft shops, award-winning Cafe de Paris, and very-own glow-worm cave. We only stopped to buy groceries and stayed for the day.

West coast of NZ; 1 hour south of Greymouth.

Fabric shopping tour

Excellent tour for sewing fans. I saw several fabric stores, couture remnants, a button store to die for and a vast haberdashery shop, all by metro.
Nice friendly guide.

Cho Lon District (Chinatown) Market

Posted by AzCaz 19 January 2010

Much better than Ben Thanh Market. It's far less touristy and the prices are even cheaper. Good quality and not so much haggling needed.

Haggling in Bodrum

Posted by MsRosie 18 January 2010

Haggling is traditional, expected and enjoyed in Turkey. It ranks as high on my list of holiday activities as sightseeing. If you go into the market and shops to look for souvenirs in Bodrum, you are going to have to play the game!

The most important thing is to decide how much you are prepared to pay for your (fake) watch or (fake) football shirt or (fake) designer perfume. Then let the shopkeeper quote first. Your offer should be much less than you are prepared to pay - as much as 25-50% of the asking price. This will probably be refused and then it's the shopkeeper's turn to bring the price down slightly - then you go in with another offer, slightly more than you first offered and so on - until you come to an agreement.

It could take quite a while and might involve a cup of apple tea ... you might need to walk away without buying anything but be gracious and part on friendly terms - the shopkeeper could begin to run after you and drag you back in and offer you a final price - if it's near enough what you expected to pay, don't let a lira or two get in the way of concluding the deal. Just remember what you were prepared to pay in the first place and more or less stick to it!

We bought a set of bowls for our villa from the market - having agreed a price for one, we then haggled for a set of four - the vendor was absolutely delighted to be doing business again with people with whom he'd already struck a deal a few seconds earlier! We all enjoyed the bartering and we were all happy with the outcome ...

Arch House Deli

A lovely delicatessen, with beautifully painted ceilings and handmade fixtures. Their on site chef makes a selection of daily dishes to eat in the cafe or take away. They also do a great range of gluten free cakes and source lots of local products as well as the best from France.

Tansas, Migro and Kipa

Posted by MsRosie 11 January 2010

Three good supermarkets, with Kipa being the largest but not necessarily the best. All three are open all day every day and Kipa is open 24 hours which is useful if you have an out-of-hours flight and you want to buy enough food to stock the fridge in your self-catering accommodation.

Kipa is on the main Bodrum highway, the others have several branches along main roads in most towns.
