Take sunscreen with you! Even if it's not so hot you'll be outside for a long time and it's surprising how quickly you can burn. One year I was the only person who brought any suncream, it was really hot and everyone was fighting over that tiny little pot!

This was our favourite beach. Not too overcrowded, round pebbles, bright turquoise water, no sea urchins (common on many of the beaches on Hvar).

We headed for a little sheltered cove off to the right of the beach which was meant to be for nudists. Not only does this have shade from the trees, but there were less people. The majority of people sunbathing there weren't nude, and as long as the odd naked couple doesn't disturb you, it's ideal! Great snorkelling here too, as on most beaches in Hvar.

Good restaurant on beach with BBQ fish and meat.

A 50m, heated, outdoor pool, near to Victoria Park and Hackney central. London Fields Lido has been renovated and is now open!

It is operated by GLL so facilities are spartan but it is fab and clean. Entry is less than £4 and the pool is open from 6.30am (mon-fri) or 8am to 8pm.

Lockers are poolside (20p) and changing rooms and showers are inside and out. There is also sunbathing space around the pool.

It is a blissful place to plough up and down: no gimmicky wave machines or even inflatables here.

Be aware, though, that if it really really rains, then you will be thrown out of the pool as visibility is reduced.

Sad irony that London summers mean that it is too wet to swim.

A huge swimming and recreational island in the middle of the Alte Donau. It is a Viennese institution, complete with chalet-style cabins, together with well-tended little gardens (the waiting list for one of these is seven to eight years, so tourists need not bother), its own fenced-off naturist sector, numerous bars. There are also swimming facilities in a variety of swimming pools and a lake (which gets a bit grubby later on in the season) and plenty of grassy areas for lying around and chatting with friends. Open from the beginning of May till the end of September.
