    Palolem Beach

Posted by eftihia 24 December 2007

This is the most beautiful beach I have ever been to. A palm tree lined, white sandy beach with beach huts overlooking. A spectacular sunset every evening. Beach shared with fishermen with small boats, crabs, pigs, monkeys and dolphins!

Take train (amazing journey) from Mumbai to Goa. Then by taxi (about £8) or bus (20p) to Palolem. Find a beach hut on arrival (about £5 a night)

    Bay of Islands

Posted by Paihia 9 August 2007

The Bay is a very chilled spot, maybe one of the best places in NZ to get on a boat and go out into the ocean. Great fishing, a great outdoors life, beautiful sunsets and sunrises, what more could you want?

During a trip to Australia in 1997, I was lucky enough to have been invited to have dinner at Doyle's on the beach in Sydney.

One of the enduring images and impressions I have of that very warm February evening, was to see the sun set over the harbour looking towards the city far away in the background.

The sun was sinking fast behind the skyscrapers - it was an amazing sight, and at that moment I had the urge to call home. I took the mobile out of my pocket, and rang to speak to my mum and brother. It was early in the morning in the UK (11 hours behind Sydney at that time of year) and I said to them, "Has the sun come up over there yet?". They replied: "Yes, just about. Why?"

My response was: "I just realised this is about the only time of the day we can see the sun at the same time from opposite sides of the world."

    North Stack

Posted by SusanneH 10 May 2007

A B&B in a redundant Fog Signal Station and a place of splendid isolation on Holyhead Mountain. You are picked up at the base of the mounatin by Land Rover and taken on a hair raising ride until you reach the accommodation. Watch the sunset and the many seabirds and enjoy delicious home cooked food.

Khao Lak is emerging as a wonderful tourist attraction appealing to those who love tranquillity amidst pristine nature. With an area of about 150 sq km covering four districts of Thai Muang, Pakong, Takua Pa and Muang, the National Park boasts virgin forests with abundant flora and fauna and waterfalls.

The cream of the park lies on Khao Lak Hill, 25 km from Amphoe Takua Pa, forming a scenic background for relaxation and a nice viewpoint for watching the sunset. Visitors can get close to the nature there where the locals live in a simple lifestyle.

    Movenpick Hotel

Posted by Skinz 30 January 2007

For a romantic sunset over the Nile it's hard to beat the Movenpick. Situated at the far southern end of the resort there aren't any other hotels nearby to spoil the view.

The sunset concert mixed with the sound of the evening chorus of birds and the sight of fellucas sailing gracefully by is hard to beat. It's open to non-residents so just turn up and watch the sun go down with your partner.

    Katharos beach and bar

Posted by losttraveller 12 January 2007

Katharos Beach - one of the best beaches in Santorini. Follow signs out of Oia village and it is a 15 minute walk.

It is hidden away between rocksides and cliffs of the island, with some amazing layers of stones acting as your backdrop. Never crowded and no annoying umbrellas/deckchairs to rent. Black sand and amazing waves.

On the way down to the beach there is the Katharos bar, a great relaxed and unpretentious place. Not tacky, not commercial or overstyled (unlike the rest of the island) - open bar, canvas roof, lots of cushions and chilled music. Again, I've never seen it crowded. Great place to have a drink after the beach.

The whole area makes a great change from the rest of Santorini - busy, busy, busy. Those famed sunsets of Santorini refer in fact to those at Katharos beach.

    Restaurant Argana

Posted by RoxyH 10 December 2006

The best vantage point to sit and watch the world go by! It's directly on the Djemaa el Fna, with several tiers of balcony, depending on your desired viewpoint. A great place to sit in the sun in the morning with a cafe latte and write your postcards, an even better place to pitch yourself around an hour before sunset and watch as the square springs to life for the evening's activities and soak up the atmosphere. If you're a woman travelling alone it's one of the (sadly) few places to sit and enjoy where you'll feel relaxed and unhassled. Prices are reasonable, the food is pretty good and you won't feel rushed to leave. Be warned though, - get there early! It gets busy and in the evening you can only have a 'front row' seat on the balcony if you are eating.
Also, if you're in Marrakech for more than a few days, escape to the coast to Essaouira. It's a few hours drive away but well worth it, fabulously laid back, with a European hippyish feel to it, this is the place to chill with a beer and watch the sunset over the Atlantic.

The old Islamic quarter, known as Darb al-Ahmar, is great for a stroll through markets and stalls that feel like they haven't changed in five hundred years. Restoration work has been carried out on a series of mosques in this area which are architecturally stunning. I was lucky enough to be given an impromptu tour at night around one of them/ The open roof revealed the stars. The Nile Hilton, not far from the Egyptian Museum (which is a must) has a rooftop bar which is definitely worth a visit for a drink overlooking the Nile at sunset. You don't have to be a hotel guest - just get in the lift and head to the top. One drink might be enough for some as it is not cheap but definitely worth the view.

    The Port Hills

Posted by Dlock 19 September 2006

The Port Hills sit above Christchurch and give you amazing views across the city, the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps. Stunning sunsets. You can drive, hike or cycle up... and there is some great mountain biking tracks as well as rock climbing - all 20mins from the centre of the city.

South of the City Centre - you can't miss them.

    The beach

Posted by Abbi 27 August 2006

The huge beach (some say 18km, some say 23) is beautiful. I have never been to such a peaceful secluded beach in the Med - lovely. If you are feeling energetic take a walk from the 'town' centre past the bread and water restaurant and follow the road. Eventually you come to the sand dunes. Time it right & take a bottle of wine to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Fantastic views at sunset. Head upstairs to the roof and order 2 for 1 cocktails that come to 3 US dollars for 2 drinks. Watch the street kids harass the tourists, lots of fun... then don't forget to order heaps of spring rolls to give to the kids when you leave.

On the corner of the bar street, one block from the old market.

    Angkor Wat pass

If you are planning to buy a three-day pass for Angkor, go and buy it the night before - you should be able to get in for sunset that same day as well for no extra charge. Bring a passport photo.

    Sunset Hill

    Posted by msw3712 17 November 2005

This hill, which your Angkor Wat guide will know, and be able to take you to, is the perfect way to round off a trip to this amazing temple comlex, by watching the sun set over the whole Angkor Site. The climb is hard going, but well worth it, although you can ride an elephant to the top for about $15. There are loads of people there, but this adds to the atmosphere, rather than ruining it. There is usually someone selling cold beers as well, and it would be rude not to!

    Your guide will take you.

    Quality Restaraunts

Posted by icme 24 October 2005

There are 2 very special restaurants that provide the perfect Southern Califronian Experience. Mr A's is situated next to Balboa Park and has fantastic views of the city, great meanu and they have the longest balcony which allows sunset walks to see every angle of the city.

Further up the coast in a beautiful town called Del Mar is Jake's where you can experience wonderful seafood, great service and fantastic views of the ocean as it sits on the beach - with spotlights at night. Neither will disappoint and enjoyed by San Diegans.

    Sunset from La Tour Montparnasse

Posted by eleanorb 17 October 2005

With 59 floors the only skyscraper in Paris: easily the best view because, as they say, it is the only place in Paris from which you do not have to look at the Tour Montparnasse! Lift takes you to the 56th floor with photo exhibition then stairs up to the top. Panoramic view, and the sun sets behind the Eiffel Tower which sparkles for the first ten minutes of each hour.

Sit on the beach and look at the sun setting - (my favoured spot is in between the two piers, looking just over the burnt out one ...) call me a freak but if it's a good day for weather - you could almost be anywhere in the world.

    Jingshan Park

Posted by vickycymru 9 October 2005

A park at the rear (northern exit) of the Palace Museum across the moat.

If your feet can bear one more climb after a day in the forbidden city, make it up to the "Pavillion of Everlasting Spring" which overlooks the entire city. Try to get there for sunset for incredible views of the hundreds of shimmering golden rooftops of the forbidden city and the expanse of Tian An Men square.

Jingshan Park, mentioned in all tourist literature, situated at the northern entrance to the Forbidden City across the moat.
Bus Route 35,104,109, Take Metro to Tian An Men then walk around the Palace Museum moat.
