Posted by SamalBahayKubo 11 September 2010

A tropical paradise that's more convenient than Boracay and better conserved too

The little car-free village of Anses D’Arlet is in the prettiest and least spoilt bay of Martinique. The white and light blue Creole house has just-the-right-size studios which open onto exotic flower gardens or the beautiful sand beach, respectively from 54 and 72 Euros a night for two people. Each studio has a little kitchen and a table outdoors. One step down and you’re in the sandy garden with hammocks hanging between the coconut palms where there are BBQs, more tables and lots of deck chairs. When you fancy a dip, open the garden gate, cross two meters of beach and you’re in the Caribbean sea. They also lend you any snorkeling equipment if it fits. It is a 2-minute beach walk to restaurants which have tables on the beach where the waves tickle your feet. The bread maker’s van hoots at 9 am for those who need fresh baguettes for breakfast in the garden. We loved it.

    Maison Mon Choisy

Posted by tropica 5 May 2008

A self-catering apartment for two people, set in a tropical garden of a family house, 150 metres from a two-mile long paradise beach protected by a coral reef, fringed by a casurina forest.

Beautiful walks in every direction, loads of safe snorkelling, diving, boat trips. Definitely the best beach on the island we saw in a great district with everything you'd want. The apartment is in a quiet place as close to the beach as you can get and is roomy and secure with parking for a hire car. It was everything we expected and more from a tropical island holiday.

It's a lovely tin roofed village stuck to the base of the best preserved colonial fort about a third way down the river San Juan. You can organise boat trips into the surrounding rain forest and there is an attractive (but very simple) eco-hotel in the village. Solentiname is a group of islands in the lake, near San Carlos. Fabulous painters and artisans and glorious setting.

Chilling out on the Ile St Marie

Posted by ladyhamilton 30 September 2005

After a hard week schlepping across country in crowded taxi brousses and struggling through jungle to spot lemurs, you will need to relax. Fly out to the Ile St Marie (fly - believe me you do NOT want to entrust your life to the small boats) and chill for a week.

You can have accommodation from the cheap (Chez Regine on the tiny Ile aux Nattes at the tip of the island is fabulous; the chicken and rice in the restaurant is sublime) or the sublime (Princess Bora lodge run by whale enthusiast "Fifou" Mayer). Imagine the Maldives without all the muppets. Amazing beaches, huge lagoon to snorkel in, humpback whale watching in season.
