    Buying wetsuits for the kids

Posted by mcreber 24 March 2008

Wetsuits for kids in Devon and Cornwall are cheap, they don't need top of the range (usually £35), just get the cheap ones (probably £10 or less). They give them sun protection, keep them warm if they are in and out of the water all day and give a bit of added buoyancy when they are learning to swim.

Get the ones with short arms and legs, you get more use out of them when they are growing fast, but remember to sun cream the lower arms and legs, or do like my kids do and wear a long UV sun suit underneath. Watch out if it's hot, especially if the kids are not going in the water much as they can get very hot with the black neoprene absorbing the heat.

They were the best things we ever bought, my daughter learned to swim in the sea when she was 4 in hers as she felt so confident.

You can buy them in surf shops (expensive), but also in most beach kiosks, bucket and spade shops in town and also in some supermarkets in beach towns. The ones from Decathlon in France are really good, and only 10 Euros.

    Surfing in Peniche

Posted by Sissi 29 February 2008

Unique and hidden gem is the north of Portugal. Peniche is a truly Portuguese place; life revolves around the sea, one of the major fishing ports, gorgeous beaches and a perfect surfing area.

You'll find the finest surfing conditions everyday regardless of the swell and wind direction. Around Peniche Surf Camp Base you can find a mix of long sandy bays and a couple of reef breaks.

Peniche Surf Camp Base has got an ocean view and is located 100 metres from three excellent waves to surf. In a 15km radius you have more than 20 waves to choose from, one of them described as the best left-hander in Portugal.

    Viking Diving Centre, Hvar Town

Posted by tanich 6 August 2007

We recently came home from a lovely holiday in Hvar. I am a PADI certified diver, but my girlfriend had not tried it before, so we decided to do a introductory dive with Viking. The diving centre were excellent - very well organised and professional, as well as very welcoming and friendly. Thoroughly recommended !!

    Daimer Bay

Posted by deplounge 6 August 2007

Beautiful beach and great for kids. The beach slopes very gently. Great for walks too. If you wander round to Rock you can get the ferry across to Padstow. Daimer Bay is great for windsurfers and surfing where there is a decent wind or swell. Voted one of the best beaches in the world.

It's a 2 minute drivefrom Polzeath, go through the Polzeath beach road and carry on for about a mile or two it's a turning on the right. if you get stuck ask a local.

Mountainbiking on mountain paths above 1000m that date from WWI, the natural beauty and the peacefulness of the area makes it a perfect place for enjoying every moment.

    Hvar Adventure Tours

Posted by Samomalo 17 July 2007

While I was recently visiting Croatia on a property buying excursion, I headed out to the island of Hvar for a few days to relax and forget about things for a while. Whilst wandering around the old square, I came across a sign for a company offering adventure tours. I opted for one of their slightly less adventurous options, a sailing trip to the isalnd of Vis. I have to say, I had an absolutely fabulous day - the crew were so friendly, Vis was amazing, and I even had a go at steering the boat! So, if you're on Hvar and fancy something a bit different, be sure to look them up!

    Coracle Racing

Posted by delancy 2 July 2007

The Coracle Races at Cilgerran, Pembrokeshire are wonderful. Bobbing and skimming along on the River Teifi beneath the historic Cilgerran Castle, the coracles make a fantastic sight!

Also, have a great day at the National Coracle Museum in Cenarth; a beautiful place set on the border of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthanshire and Ceredigion.

This website shows just how much the coracle is alive and kicking (hurrah!) in the coastal and river areas of England, Wales and Ireland - have a go and enjoy the coracle races, we do!

    Youth Hostel Plakias

    Posted by nomad28 5 June 2007

When I was in Rethymno, Crete in 2001 I was told about a hostel in a village called Plakias that I should go visit. I went down to Plakias and ended up staying for weeks, and returned several times over the next few years. There is great snorkeling and hiking within walking distance of the hostel. This is one of the best hostels I've been to in many years of travelling.

If you’re in Ullapool, drive north to Cape Adventure for some seakayaking around some delightful coastal bays ringed by knuckles of rock, all in the shadow of Ben Stack – said to be the inspiration for Tolkien’s Mountain of Doom. Driving there through Sutherland is staggering.

    Beaches in Pattaya

Posted by khunwilko 28 March 2007

Visually, the beaches in Pattaya are not up to much compared to elsewhere in Thailand; it’s a very urban environment with rows of umbrellas and deck-chairs. Although people do swim, the sea is rather polluted, (how much is unclear) they claim to have cleaned up the water a lot in the last few years and have marked out areas for swimmers.

Neighbouring Jomtien beach, about a 15 min bus ride away looks to be more swimmer-friendly but there is the occasional bout of untreated sewerage there from time to time. (This IS Thailand!).

Cosy beach and Sugar beach between Pattaya and Jomtien offer less crowded or urban alternatives. Bear in mind that what is done to monitor pollution on any of the beaches throughout Thailand is not clear. Inevitably, ALL the main holiday beaches in Thailand are subject to pollution from time to time depending on season wind and tides.

At both Pattaya and Jomtien beaches you can hire all sorts of watersports stuff, and it’s all pretty cheap. All beaches have plenty of people selling drinks and snacks etc. Have a fresh coconut and drink the liquid inside through a straw - very refreshing!

Off shore there are one or two islands with much nicer beaches, they are easily accessible for a day trip. If you go to Ko Laan, the main beach is really just a row of restaurants etc, but it’s well worth hiring a moped and driving over to the other side of the island - views from the top are great and there are some very quiet beaches there. Or simply walk along the coast for a bit to get away from the crowds.

    Heron Island

Posted by Brenda Isles 9 March 2007

Having just returned from Heron Island, we can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy an easy few days, whilst capturing some of the most amazing natural sights. It is off the coast of Gladstone, Queensland.

Between December and March, female turtles come on the island to lay their eggs. Between January and March turtle hatchlings scramble to the sea. It is a great place to enjoy great beaches, great snorkeling and diving and nature at its most natural. Go on the free talks and walks early on and learn how to behave so that you watch but don’t interfere with the natural cycles on the island. I recommend the Beach House. It’s the most expensive accommodation, but is the most comfortable and is situated on the beach. If you get travel sick, try the helicopter, a much easier way of getting to the island, although there is a cost consideration.

Heron Island was the best part of a long trip. Highly recommended for experiences you won't forget.

    Visiting Puerto Rico

    Posted by Jimbo79 4 December 2006

What a place! From the old cobbled streets in San Juan, to the surfers paradise of the west coast, Puerto Rico has everything on offer. It seems to have been overlooked in terms of travel and tourism, and those tourists that do go there are mainly from the cruise ships that dock in San Juan. However, this island is crying out to be explored and offers some spectacular scenery, great watersports and buzzing nightlife.

Moonbeach & Green Hotel in Ras Sudr

Posted by Shelli 17 October 2006

This is a little gem! It's all about windsurfing, yoga, kitesurfing but in a fantastically relaxed and friendly environment that is off the beaten track and feels like you have really escaped.

Even though I was on my own, it was really easy to fit in and great to try something as full on as kitesurfing on a huge natural lagoon area, but then get into yoga as well. It's close enough to Cairo to get to see the pyramids which are really awesome. Moonbeach itself is a 3 star kind of hotel, or there is a new, bigger very nice 4 star Green hotel beside the kite lagoons. There are flight options every day and it felt like a very tailor made holiday - without the price tag!

Moonbeach is in Ras Sudr which is halfway between Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh

    The Huka Jet

Posted by kama 5 October 2006

The Huka Jet is a 30 minute high speed jet boating experience that shows you the spectacular Huka Falls and whizzes you past cliffs at 80km per hour. It does a 360 degree spin, and, at times, you get so close to the cliff walls that you can almost feel them graze your ears!

Afterwards, lunch at the Huka Prawn Park right next to the Huka Jet is delicious.

Near Taupo - if you are staying in Taupo, a courtesy coach will pick you up from your accomodation. It costs NZ$79, which is a bit pricey, but a unique experience. Oh, and I advise you to book!

    Canoeing in the Paradise Bay

Posted by poch 22 April 2006

Wandering with a canoe in the Paradise Bay is very relaxing. The waters of the bay is turqoise blue and it gets narrower as you head inside. It becomes like a canyon with walls of green, and is a perfect combination with the blue sea.
