Kate Atkinson in her book 'Started Early, Took My Dog' writes about her hero: "his favourite abbey so far was Jervaulx. Privately owned, with an honesty box at the gate and no English Heritage branding, the ruins had touched his soul in an inarticulate and melancholy place, the nearest thing to holiness foe an atheistic Jackson."

We stayed in the lovely Park House run by the owners of the Abbey, Ian and Carol Burdon - superb accommodation, excellent breakfast and delightful hospitality - thoroughly recommended. We paid £75 a night for two.

Stunning bed and breakfast accommodation in a renovated mansion located in one of the Pelion's most unspoilt and beautiful villages.

Ward and Wies Renders, are delightful and very helpful Belgian hosts who opened Little Swallows in 2007 after renovating one of the quite amazing mansions that are dotted across this wonderful Greek peninsular. The standard of the accommodation is exceptional, as are the wonderful breakfasts, and the pool is a real bonus.

The area is fantastic walking country following old cobbled trails which link villages together - Ward will provide excellent advice about routes. Even in mid-summer the sound of running water, gentle breezes and forests soften the intense heat.

Nearby is the well-known village of Milies - one end of a narrow gauge steam railway which winds through the stunning mountain scenery.

The village of Pinakates has a number of good tavernas and a car is not essential - but helpful if you want to see more of the area as buses are infrequent.

This place can't be recommended highly enough.

Relaxed and friendly atmosphere; superb fish with stunning desserts - the trio of creme brulee was superb and enough to share.

Not cheap but worth every penny. Don't miss it - the two TV chefs borrowed the name, with permission. Named after the first to open at 88 Dumbarton Road.
