    Jumping Jenny's

Posted by AlanFerguson 27 May 2012

Jumping Jenny's doesn't just claim to be the best but it is. As every cake mouthful melts you instantly HAVE to have more. Be it a cool or warm day, a cup of tea in proper china hones the taste buds for more delicious cake - oh if you insist. All supped and enjoyed while watching the vapor trails from National Trust's steam yacht Gondola which has just deposited you at the jetty below, dissipate to reveal the most fantastic view of Coniston and the Lake District mountains.

    Gallery on the Green

Posted by AlanFerguson 6 March 2011

Quirky but familiar, intimate yet communal; for a photography gallery with a difference visit the "Tardis" of Settle, North Yorkshire - 'The Gallery On The Green'. Step inside the classic red phone booth and you are transported to wherever the images take you. The charm of the smallest gallery in the world has inspired not only the local community but even guitarist and astronomer Brian May supported a 3D exhibition of stereoscopic photographs. Here small really is beautiful.

    Eaves Wood Silverdale

Posted by AlanFerguson 10 October 2010

Follow the waymarked route from the car park and wander along wooded paths through dappled light and birdsong into a land of Narnia. Rustling leaves tell of deer, foxes, squirrels and hares watching but unseen. Continue through mossy limestone grottos, past a ruined cottage, the cathedral-like Beech Circle, majestic yews and reach your destination - the Pepperpot obelisk commanding its spectacular vista across Morecambe Bay and beyond to the Yorkshire Pennines and Cumbrian fells. Visit late on an autumn afternoon and you'll be rewarded with the best sunset in Britain. This is the magic of Eaves Wood, Silverdale. Later refresh with real ales and guest beers at the adjacent Woodlands Hotel – a gothic mansion redolent of the Adams Family, but that’s another story.
