    Jazz in Melbourne

Posted by Ann Scriven 9 February 2006

Let's start out with the Jazz weekend radio shows on 106.7 PBS. It all kicks off on Saturday at 6am with roots and blues on Dogs’ Breakfast with Glen Morrow, then slides wonderfully into your more traditional jazz with Jazz on Saturdays with Steve Robertson. After that spend the rest of your weekend tuned in for all kinds
of jazzy treats in different genres.

For awesome late night jazz on your radio while you're grooving into your weekend, try 105.9 ABC radio: Jazz Up Late with Gerry Koster. Check the show out with this link:
    www.abc.net.au/classic/jazzuplate/

Try some of these venues for live jazz:

    Dizzy's Jazz Club in Richmond
    Bennett's Lane, Melbourne CBD
Tony Starr's Kitten Club, Melbourne CBD

    Yarra Valley

Posted by Ann Scriven 1 February 2006

If you want to see some of Victoria’s gorgeous countryside (of which there is so much to see) try the Yarra Valley. Most tourist organizations can give you a hand at getting there or just hire a car and get on to the Yarra Valley website for some of the best vineyards, wining and dining experiences. Make a day trip of it or check out the amazing B&Bs and share a romantic break or perhaps just a fun get together weekend with your travelling mates.

Here are just a few places to check out:

    De Bertoli winery and restaurant
Amazing wines with an extensively trained staff who will take you through a super tasting experience. Their restaurant and products are also worth the drive out.

    Chandon Sparkling Wines
As you may know, Chandon has award winning sparkling wines & here they are for your tasting pleasure. Experience their sparkling delights and beautiful light meals in front of a view to die for. Self-guided tours of the winery are also available and worth attending.

    Yarra Glen
Located in the heart of the wine district, this beautiful very small town has loads of country style, super antique shops, great food and wonderful wines.

    Healesville
The home of the Healesville Sanctuary, this town is hard to beat. The views are outstanding, the locals friendly. This small town is home to amazing culinary delights such as The Healesville Hotel, The Wattle Seed Cafe and Harvest. The Grand Hotel is the place to go for some good ol' Aussie fare.

There's even a tea house at the top of a 'hill'. A bit down the main
street and you fall into The Bohdi Tree, a place where atmosphere, great music and food are in an abundance.

    Hidden bars

Posted by Ann Scriven 1 February 2006

Try the hidden pubs and Lounges for a change. They're not just places to drink, but eat, relax and check out some great hidden scenes and music. Try places like Tony Starr's Kitten Club for great music, unusual drinks and amazing fusion Australasian food. Or perhaps the big overstuffed chairs and cozy surroundings of GP (the Gin Palace), where the list of martinis will dazzle all. They arrive at your table in very tall glasses and are all themed and use the best ingredients.

If those places are not hip enough, how about La La Land, where their specialty is fondue and the settings will have you relaxing and feeling hip the minute you recline on one of the many sofas.

    Tony Starr’s Kitten Club: 267 Little Collins Street, Melbourne; tel: 03 9650 2448; www.kittenclub.com.au

Gin Palace: 190 Little Collins Street, Melbourne; tel: 03 9654 0533

La La Land: Corner of Hardware and Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne; tel: 03 9670 5011

All of these hidden places can be found in a simple
pack of cards. These cards contain not only the addresses of Melbourne’s hidden bars (which can be down an alley and through an unmarked door) but directions as well. The cards break down the CBD into areas which makes planning your evening and getting to each venue very easy. For more information see www.shoppingsecrets.com
