We stayed at Kipungani, which is about a 40 minute boat ride from the airport at Lamu. It was wonderful there and you feel you are Robinson Crusoe. A great place to stay - if all you wanted to do was laze about, walk or swim/dive etc. Food excellent and lovely staff.
We went into Lamu town on a day trip, which I was so looking forward to but it was rather disappointing. Looks good from a distance, but considering it's a World Heritage site, it was like a tip. I've travelled quite a bit, China, Cambodia, Russia to name a few and the only place that was as bad was Phnom Pehn. Lamu has very narrow streets and no cars which is great and the main form of transport is donkeys.
People do not like having their photo taken which is rather disappointing and they let you know it! They are heavily into football especially Liverpool FC.
