Located five minute's walk away from the main square (Praça da Liberdade)is this Porto institution (which is due to celebrate its 50th anniversary this November).
The speciality of the house is BBQ food – meat, fish and the star of the show as the name of the restaurant insinuates is the chicken (frango being the Portuguese for chicken). The food is delicious, the standard portions are really meant for two, but many a hearty diner seemed to be giving it a go. For the not so hungry, there are half portions.
It’s a pretty simple place full of locals (which is always a good sign). Downstairs you will find a bar filled mostly with local gentlemen at the counter socializing while having their meal and upstairs a simply decorated dining room filled mainly with families and couples.
The service from the waiters is professional, efficient and friendly.
Also worth a mention is the local beer, the refreshingly crisp and fizzy Super bock.
Upon leaving, the smile on your face will not only be from the delicious meal you just ate, but also from the reasonable price you just paid.

I saw this bistrot recommended in a 2008 Guardian article as one of the 'Top 10 Paris bistrots on a budget'. I can gladly say that it continues to please. We were superbly attended to from start to finish by the friendly owner/ waiter making us feel very welcome. We ordered the three course menu (€18.50-very reasonable for an evening meal in Paris) and let the owner suggest a wine, which went perfectly with the fish we ordered. A constant supply of chilled water was brought to the table and baskets of wonderful fresh bread. The chocolate pudding and the tiramisu were delicious. As a digestif we had the excellent homemade Vanilla rum (€4.50).

In the heart of the trendy neighbourhood of El Born just minutes away from the chaos of Las Ramblas you will find this gem of a pizzeria run by a group of young friendly Argentinians.
The offering consists of a wide variety of delicious crusty deep base pizza by the slice made with quality ingredients. I recommend the pineapple and bacon and anchovy and tomato. They also have savoury tarts and empanadas. Each item costs a very reasonable €1.80.
If you feel like something sweet they have a range of typical Argentinian desserts that are worth a try.
The place is quite small, catering mainly to the locals and is usually always packed- a good thing since pizza is always fresh.
If the weather is obliging you can get take away and have it on one of stone benches outside.

This is an excellent café selling strong espressos for 1 Cuban peso (extremely cheap about four pence!)
Unlike most of the tourist cafés and restaurants, there were always Cubans there enjoying a coffee.

Old style perfumery where one can buy cologne and perfume with scents such as citrus, jasmine, rose, orange blossom, lavender and tobacco.
If you bring your own container you can purchase the scent for the bargain price of 0.20CUC per 10ml. If you want to splash out you can buy the scent in one of the ceramic perfume containers or bottles of varying sizes that make a nice present.

Artisan market set in recently refurbished warehouse. Until November 2009 it was located in the streets around the Plaza de la Catedral.

Here you can find all sorts of interesting Cuban souvenirs including beautiful paintings, wonderful photographic prints, guayaberas (traditional shirt), woodwork, leather items, jewellery, painted ceramics and handcrafted cigar boxes (my personal favourite - the best ones can be found from an amiable man
in the centre of the market. He is quite passionate about them!).

Don't always pay what they first ask for. Haggle for a better price.

There are also food venues, money exchange facilities, public toilets and public phones.

Open every day including Sundays and holidays (except national Holidays or when the authorities declare special holidays) from 10am to 6pm.
