Highland Park is lovely all year round, but especially during lilac season in May. See if you can find the rare Gingko trees. Park located between Highland Avenue and Goodman Street on the south side of town.
Memorial Art Gallery has a very respectable collection in a cloister-like atmosphere. Also recommended is George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. Tour the stately home of the founder of Kodak, and in the evening watch a classic film screened in pristine condition at the Dryden Theatre on the museum grounds.

Or if you're not in the mood to walk, drive out to the village of Pittsford and take the Sam Patch Tour Boat on the Erie Canal. Daily cruises, lunch and dinner. Nearby are boutiques, cafes, and ice cream parlours.
If you don't take the tour, you can always walk the canal. A place for contemplation.

In the summer, watch the world go by at Frontier Field. Tickets are inexpensive, and you can sit pretty much wherever you like. Even if you aren't interested in baseball (the Red Wings) or soccer (the Rhinos), this is a great place for people watching, and one of the few places where you can sit outside, soak up the sun, and drink beer all at the same time. After the game, cross State Street and head over to the High Falls.

Take the kids to Strong Children's Museum. Lots of hands-on stuff and Sesame Street characters. You can sit and relax over coffee while they run around. Children will not be disappointed.
Downtown at 1 Manhattan Square; 585 263 2700; www.strongmuseum.org
The footbridge over the Genessee River at High Falls. Combines spectacular view with bird watching (attention falconists!) and adjacent High Falls historic district (Platt and Mill Streets).
Also recommended: the panoramic view from Cobb's Hill Reservoir, on the corner of Monroe Avenue and Highland Avenue; check out the large turtle in the reservoir too. Favourite spot for joggers.
