    Heimaey island

Posted by JimmyH 13 April 2011

The largest island in the Westman Islands, now more accessible since a new ferry service opened in July 2010 - a 25 minute trip.
Great for a day trip. Climb a volcano, still hot after the 1973 eruption, and see where parts of the town were buried beneath the lava flow. See puffins from the ship.

Well signposted from Route 1 near the Sejalandsfoss waterfall.

    Chora Church / Kariye Muzesi

Posted by JimmyH 5 April 2009

A beautifully and sensitively restored church with outstanding mosaics depicting various biblical scenes.

It's not easy to get to but worth the effort.
Go to the bus terminus at Eminonu on the waterfront side of the street.
Find the bus stop for number 90.
It should say Draman on front.
Ride the bus all the way to the terminus. It goes through a fascinating neighbourhood. Then continue to walk straight on up the same street up the hill.
At a T junction go left and immediately right up Nester St.
The church, a brick building which looks like a mosque is over on a side street to the right.
    Don't go on Wednesday - it's shut.

    Seawall Promenade

Posted by JimmyH 25 March 2006

It is a 10km along the coastal perimeter of Stanley Park. It is a great place to view Lion's gate Bridge, cruise liners heading up to Alaska, and just for people watching. Ideally, hire a bicycle at the north end of Denman Street.
