    The Black Isle

Posted by JohnERobertson 31 October 2006

Not really an island but a really beautiful area, Fortrose, Avoch (pronounced och!!) and Cromarty are really beautiful. See dolphins at Channonry Point near Fortrose.

Across the Kessock Bridge and you're there, five minutes from the centre of Inverness City.

Tiny village in the north of Skye, has an excellent youth hostel, but the best thing is to take the road over the hills to the east coast from there to see the Quiraing, spectacular almost lunar scenery and extraordinary views.

    Northern peninsula of Skye.

    Getting there

Posted by JohnERobertson 17 October 2006

If you are travelling by train from Munich, there are two routes. Take the longer route via Garmish Partenkirchen, an amazing journey with super scenery.

    Avoid Wenceslas Square

Posted by JohnERobertson 16 October 2006

Avoid this in the early evening unless you want to be constantly pestered by ticket touts for sex shows. They are VERY persistant, I eventually had to get really rude with them before they got the message. They seem to be paid by result hence their persistance.

    Wenceslas Square.

    Kendal town

Posted by JohnERobertson 16 October 2006

Good centre, with excellent range of shops, hotels and restaurants. Visit the Netherfield centre at the old K Shoe factory for shoes naturally.

Only drawback is its a nightmare place to drive, but hey so is the whole of the Lake District!

    Gairloch

Posted by JohnERobertson 16 October 2006

A lovely fishing village near Inverewe Gdns, also has an ATM, rare in this area! And a fish and chip shop selling locally caught fish. A good selection of shops for a small village, and incredible beach nearby. Nice youth hostel called Carn Dearg.

    On the coast road.

    Deutsches Museum

Posted by JohnERobertson 1 October 2006

Amazing place but be prepared to spend at least half a day, its huge! Decent cafe and shop (unusual gifts) how did they get the locomotives up to the first floor. Incredible aircraft section with unusual exhibits, very early jet fighter, V2 rocket. The spriral stair winds around the rocket, so I didn't notice it at first.

The museum is on an island in the river Isar. Trams from Hauptbahnhof.

    Take the tram

Posted by JohnERobertson 17 October 2006

Take the tram up the Stubai valley to Fulpmes which is really beautiful, or the number 3 tram to Igls, then the cable car to the top of Patcherkorfl. I found a nice cafe at the top selling wonderful Goulash Soup.

Another nice trip is up the Hafflekar, funicular then two cable cars, but wear good boots with good soles. NOT trainers or high heels!

    Hotel Brunnenhof

Posted by JohnERobertson 16 October 2006

Nice clean hotel, very central, a couple of minutes from the station. Good breakfast, clean comfortable rooms and nice staff. There is a good Italian restaurant a couple of seconds away.

Schiller Strasse, opposite the side entrance to the Hauptbahnhof.
