York was designed for walking, so if you come by car use one of the many park & ride buses and read the free guide as you ride! The museum gardens by the river are great for a picnic, and it's only a short step to the museum's excellent Roman & Viking exhibits. When walking through York don't forget to look up - and whatever you do, don't forget your camera.
Make sure that you locate the local tourist office/s to stock up with any free local maps or what's on guides. Always ask at the counter as they sometimes hide the best to avoid the "collector syndrome".
Local papers usually have information on current happenings (try www.yorkpress.co.uk and www.thisisyork.co.uk online), or you can do a Google search to find a selection of things to do, so you can plan ahead.
If you want to check out whether a venue, B&B or hotel is right for you, an internet search for the name + review often provides excellent customer feedback information to help you avoid the worst and find the bargains.
Talk to local residents who are often willing to help with directions, bus routes etc. Try and pick someone who looks local, perhaps in a shop, on a bus or in the pub or coffee bar.
I stayed in the Hotel Neptun directly on the harbour front, known for its excellent food. This is a small hotel and part of a larger chain but room and service were excellent.
