Take a trip across the largest lake on South Island to go down a deep cave on a small boat, very impressive, but even more so when you get to see the glow worms. Unfortunately, no cameras as the flash will upset these delicate insects.

The ferry ride across is really good if the sun's going down. Wear a sweater, at least, as the cave can be cool.

Don't forget to buy the T-shirt.

A very good regional gallery & museum. A couple of very good Landseer's overlook the cafe's interior. Seeing the paintings by John Martin (a local) is worth the visit alone; also, a good walk around of Newcastle's history. Family friendly.

Have a Tiger and some noodles from the local eateries while you're there - very worhwhile.

Don't forget to visit Raffles for a Singapore Sling; I know it's very touristy but you'll regret it if you don't do it.
For eating, drinking & a great gallery in The Baltic. It's not necessary to use the Quayside Link as the walk from Grey's Monument down Grey Street and Dean Street to The Side passes some of the finest architecture in Britain, never mind England. There are also a few good pubs and some excellent restaurants on the way to the quay and at the bottom on the right-hand side you will find the wonderful "Side Gallery"
