Howick Hall and gardens are the home of the Grey family. It was the 2nd Earl Grey who created earl grey tea which was made specifically to balance the lime in the local well. The gardens have trees and shrubs from across the world but with special emphasis on Japan and the far east.
The estate is along the beautiful Northumberland coast.

Black Middens Bastle is one of the best preserved Bastle houses dating back to Border Reiver times. It is in the Tarset Valley ( North Tyne, Northumberland) and this is a truly remote and isolated region where you can believe that you are back in the violent times when this fortified house was built.

    Grid reference NY775898.
You need a car, there is no other easy way to visit the Bastle. Closest train station is Hexham.

    Quinta do Barranca da Estrada

Posted by MikeHolly 16 February 2009

The Quinta is on the shores of the barragem de Santa Clara in lower ( Baixa) Alentejo. It faces south and has fantastic views over the lake with water sports facilities as well. The isolation of the Quinta makes it ideal for unwinding. However be aware that there is no TV, mobile reception is not good and to go "offsite" is a 20 minute drive until you come to the main road.

It takes 90 minutes to reach the Quinta by car from Faro.Alternatively Lisbon is 2 1/2 hours by car.
There are two trains a day from both Faro or Lisbon which stop at Santa Clara. Thereafter either take a taxi or contact the Quinta for collection.

    Wetheral Cottages

Posted by MikeHolly 10 February 2009

Great Salkeld is an ancient village within the Eden Valley, Cumbria. It has a number of historic attractions. There are the remains of the medieval Aikton Castle, then there is St Cuthberts church parts of which date back to 880AD. The church is one of only three in Cumbria to have a defensive Pele tower.
The Eden Valley offers great walking, shooting and fishing.
With Great Salkeld the most convenient accommodation is probably Wetheral Cottages.

Public transport is limited, although the Carlisle to Settle railway line runs through the Valley and stops at Lazonby , about 5 miles away.
The address for the village is here
Great Salkeld, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 9NA

This website provides good aerial views of the village

    The College Valley

Posted by MikeHolly 10 February 2009

The Valley is a private working estate which grants access to all walkers and limited access for cars. It provides easy access to the Cheviot and surrounding peaks. You can easily reach the border fence with Scotland. There is lots of wildlife, from the feral goats, red deer and fox, through to a large variety of birds. There are also ancient hill forts from the Bronze Age to explore. Peace and tranquility are there for free.

Access is really only possible by car. There is no public transport to this remote valley.Car parking is available at the bottom of the Valley.

    Quinta do Barranco da Estrada

Set alongside a large man made lake in an idyllic position. It's quite isolated and the long rough access road means you cant go anywhere fast. But for anyone wanting to just chill out then this is a great place.

    Hethpool Mill

Posted by MikeHolly 26 January 2009

Self catering cottage within the College Valley. Isolated valley within the heart of the Cheviot Hills and at the end of the Pennine Way. There is evidence of a mill dating back to the 13th century here, and the bronze age hill forts surrounding the valley attest to the antiquity of the area. Just 5 miles or so from the Scottish border. The nearest town in Wooler and the North East beaches are just 30 minutes away.

    Quinta do Barranca da Estrada

Posted by MikeHolly 26 January 2009

Rambling B&B establishment set on the side of a hill overlooking a large lake. Boats available for guests to use. The proprietor, Frank Mclintock, is slightly eccentric and fusses over the guests. Food is cooked on site and in so many ways you are made to feel as is if you are a guest staying with a friend. The area has a lot of wildlife and Frank is a keen birdwatcher. The remoteness and isolation will really help you to forget the outer world.
