We had a trip to an area of old sugar production, now a bit down on its heels - in the town of Central Australia. Our children enjoyed the chance of a short trip on an old steam train and a chew of sugar cane by the side of the track, but my highlight was a tour around the offices in town where Fidel directed operations during the Bay of Pigs invasion. The rusting engine of a shot down plane lies nearby.
Central Australia is about 40 miles from Varadero.
This hotel is perfectly positioned across the square from Hotel Inglaterra if you want to drink in old Havana, and viewing the town centre from its rooftop pool is worth the stay.
