    Le Brulot

Posted by PeteinSQ 25 July 2007

Le Brulot is a fantastic French restaurant in Antibes. It does amazing steak cooked in a traditional wood fired oven (a brulot). They also cook wonderful fish, mussels and other seafood.

This isn't a particularly posh restaurant, it would probably be best described as rustic. However, the food speaks for itself and I always visit whenever I am in the area.

    Brymoor Ice cream

Posted by PeteinSQ 2 April 2007

Brymoor ice cream is made in Jervaulx in Wensleydale. They only use milk from their own herd of pedigree Guernsey cows. You can either buy ice cream from the parlour at the farm itself or you will find it stocked in various local shops and supermarkets. It is a local favourite for very good reasons.

    Brasserie Pakhuis

Posted by PeteinSQ 31 January 2007

Brasserie Pakhuis is a fantastic restaurant just off the main shopping street (Veldstraat).

It is housed in a fantastic, converted warehouse which makes an amazing setting for a meal.

Food is a wonderful mixture of French and Italian. They also do great fish platters with whole lobsters etc. There is an extensive wine list, and also (of course) an extensive list of beers. As well as the restaurant there is also a bar which you can visit for a drink.

Pakhuis is popular with locals, which I always think is a good sign.

Have a look at their website for a menu and an idea of what it looks like.

    Caffé Caldesi

Posted by PeteinSQ 16 August 2006

Caffé Caldesi is a great Italian restaurant (and cookery school) just off Marylebone High Street. They specialise in regional Italian food, so it isn't the sort of place to go for pizza and pasta (especially not pizza as they don't have any on the menu). The food I had when I went there was fantastic: Sardine alla Siciliana followed by Tagliata di Manzo.

The restaurant is relatively expensive with main courses costing about £15. A meal for two with wine would probably come to £70. Really fantastic

    Baywatch on the Beach

Posted by PeteinSQ 4 July 2006

An excellent fish and steak restaurant on the beach at St Helens. When I went I had fantastic mussels. I recommend cycling there if you can.

    Trencher's Fish Restaurant

Posted by PeteinSQ 4 July 2006

Trencher's is a fantastic fish and chip restaurant. It isn't a takeaway - you eat in. The fish and chips are fantastic. Obviously you can't go to Whitby without having fish and chips at least once and I recommend here.

    The Jazz Cafe

Posted by PeteinSQ 30 May 2006

This is a great cafe in central Bath. I go there whenever I'm in Bath (which used to be often) and it is my favourite place to eat there. They serve an excellent English breakfast all day, but not only that, they do toasted sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes and other more filling options. Jazz music is (as you might expect) played at all times. Take the kids here - they'll like it, as will you.

    Royal Teas

Posted by PeteinSQ 8 December 2005

Royal Teas is a wonderful café slightly off the beaten track in Greenwich. They do wonderful hot chocolate, teas and coffees. Coffee beans are ground there and then and you can by loose tea and coffee beans there too.

All of their food is vegetarian and is fantastic - and this is coming from a committed carnivore.

It is also very good value, with prices much cheaper than Starbucks and other chains that are also to be found in Greenwich.

In addition to all of this it is in a wonderful part of Greenwich. I recommend going for a walk round Royal Hill and up towards Black Heath, you can stop off here for a nice drink on the way back.

    Le Cirio

Posted by PeteinSQ 6 December 2005

This is a traditional bar with a 19th-century interior. Wood panelling, leather being very much in abundance. They do simple food such as croque monsieur and croque bruxellois.

They also have a good varied range of beers that are (of course) served in their correct glasses. It is the sort of place where you can sit down and have a nice drink in a nice old fashioned kind of place.

    Restaurant Vincent

Posted by PeteinSQ 6 December 2005

This is a fantastic restaurant quite close to the Grand Place. Founded in 1905, the restaurant specialises in steak flambé, which is cooked in front of you. They also do excellent moules and many other wonderful dishes.

The staff are excellent, and it made me smile that they wore uniforms. It is a very popular restaurant with tourists and locals. There is a nice bar on the other side of the road where you can have a beer if you have to wait for a table.

    Mr Bartley's burger cottage

Posted by PeteinSQ 15 September 2005

Mr Bartley's is a Boston institution, he has been serving great burgers for four decades now. It does fantastic burgers all named after different celebrities and politicians, one example being the Bill Gates - the best of everything! When you arrive at the restaurant Mr Bartley himself shows you to your table. The restaurant is a bit of squash but that just adds to the character of the place. Be warned they only take cash!
