    Hanging out in Hoi An

Posted by PeterJSmith 8 May 2010

The ancient city of Hoi An in Vietnam is a terrific place to while away a few days. Have a suit made, enjoy some local food and relax with a cold cheap beer watching the world go by at a relaxing pace.
Exploring the old city is fun and rewarding, restored buildings galore and a sense of timelessness prevails.
If you fancy the beach to escape the sun it's only a few minutes away.
I also recommend the Dai Long hotel for a well priced budget place to stay that is clean and well managed.

Take a break from the rushing around in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville and spend some quality time in the lazy backwaters of Kampot and the seaside town of Kep.

Enjoy fried crab with kampot peppers and take a sundowner overlooking the bokor hills.

There has been a new water taxi service between San Pedro on Ambergris Caye Belize and Chetumal in Mexico since November 2009. One thing that should be noted is that although it only runs on Friday to Monday the exit tax is only 7.50 BZE as opposed to 37.50 at the regular borders.
This offsets the price of $30 USD one way and makes getting from San Pedro to Playa del Carmen or Cancun very easy.
You can leave San Pedro at 7.15 am and be in Cancun by 4.20pm.

    Pedro's Hotel

Posted by PeterJSmith 16 November 2009

Figuring out how to find a budget place to stay on Ambergris Caye in Belize got a lot easier when I stumbled upon Pedro’s Hotel. I had already been checking out the area and was very happy to find a great budget deal that had more of the amenities than other budget rooms yet still kept to my allowance per day.
The rooms are basic but clean and sport two twin beds, air conditioning, a private bathroom and cable TV. The rest of the buildings comprise a swimming pool and sun deck, a bar, a restaurant and of course the owner Peter who is on hand to offer advice on the local area.
All in all a very good deal for those on a budget in Belize, those looking for a cheap vacation or backpackers with a splurge on!

    Walking in Plakias

Posted by PeterJSmith 17 July 2009

Away from the hubub and mass tourist market, the small town of Plakias lends itself to hiking the mountain paths and wonderful cliff walks during the day and relaxing in the pleasant seaside atmosphere in the evening.

Budget travellers can stay at the Plakias Youth Hostel run by amiable manager Chris, while the more well heeled can rent a small apartment for a few more Euros.

    Plakias Youth Hostel

Posted by PeterJSmith 19 April 2009

Situated at the mouth of a spectacular gorge and set in a tranquil olive grove. This spotless hostel lends itself to long spring sojourns for the intrepid walker or beach lover alike.

Eight person spacious dorms all with a patio, table and chairs surround a grass covered communal area with ample shade.

The manager is on hand to take care of simple needs like internet access, bottles of local wine and ice cold Mythos beers. Breakfast is a simple and cheap affair but the community spirit is what makes the hostel buzz.

Guests come from all over the world and some stay months or even the whole season to enjoy the local beaches and simple life that Plakias affords.

A world away from the resorts of the north the Plakias youth hostel gives much in return for the thoughtful and social traveller.

Plakias can be reached by bus from most major towns in the north of Crete.

    Antigua Bodega Castaneda

Posted by PeterJSmith 18 April 2009

One of the best tapas bars in Andalucía, snuggled in a side street near Plaza Nueva not far from the Alhambra palace. Dating from the 1930's this two section bar and restaurant turns out spectacular tapas to locals and visitors alike.

Traditional bull’s heads and pictures of matadors decorate the walls, the floors are awash with paper and sawdust and the crowds pile in ebbing and flowing as the evening progresses.

In Granada most tapas are free with a drink and this can really set you up for the evening. For something more substantial you can order a racion or even a half. This will be on a larger plate with bread and olives. The local Serrano ham and Manchego cheese are delicious and washed down with a tasty rioja you know you are in Spain.

Finally this particular bodega has its own fiery drinks combination called calicasas a mix of several different casks and served in a tall glass. Be aware, this is potent stuff but then so is Granada.

Flores is a small island on Lake Peten set near the beautiful Mayan temple ruins of Tikal. Rooms are easy to find here and Amigos Hostel is by far the most colourful. Remember to get up early and take the 4.40 am tour to tikal. This means you get to see the jungle wake up.

Bus to Flores then minibus to Tikal. Hostel Amigos can be found at www.amigoshostel.com

    The Lagos Youth Hostel

Posted by PeterJSmith 12 April 2009

A bright modern hostel situated in the centre of Lagos on the Algarve. It has sixty odd, four-bunk rooms, a kitchen, free breakfast, a central courtyard for meeting fellow travellers. An excellent place to meet people and rest up on the grand european tour.

Rua Lancarote de Freitas in the old town of Lagos.
