Keralan restaurant on the London Road in Liverpool, round the back of Lime Street Station.

Claims to be the only south Indian restuarant in the northwest, and while that may not be true, the lunchtime thalis (£6, veg or non-veg with fish) are a treat, especially a fantastic tangy tomato curry that comes with the veg option.

More elaborate food in the evenings, including superb pot-roast lamb with coconut. Their vada and aloo bonda are excellent as well, and they'll quickly prepare a take-away bag of snacks if you're catching the train.

After the Chishtiyya Shrine in Ajmer this is the most important Muslim shrine in India, attracting thousands of worshippers (Muslim and Hindu) every day. Nizamudin Auliya, a Sufi shaikh of the Chishtiyya order, lived the latter part of his life during the reign of the brutal Sultan Muhammad ibn Tughluq (1325-1351), whom he infuriated by refusing to acknowledge his authority, using a Persian expression which has become a byword in India "Hanuz Dilli dur ast" (Delhi is yet far away).

The shrine also contains the marble tomb of Amir Khusro, the great Persian poet of Delhi, and a number of fine Mughal buildings. On Thursday evenings Qawal (devotional music) is sung, from about 6.00-7.30pm.

Nizamuddin is a Muslim enclave in south Delhi, near the railway station of the same name. Once you enter its narrow alleys (where you can get superb kebabs and other muslim dishes) just follow the stream of people heading for the shrine, which lies down several long and twisting passage-ways. You don't need to take off your shoes until you get to the entrance, despite what the shopkeepers along the route may say. Just look at what the pilgrims are doing

Founded in 1913, Karim's is the most famous Mughlai restaurant in Delhi, serving the food, which once caressed the palates of the Mughal Emperors. The kebabs are succulent, the biryanis fragrant and the kormas and other curries rich and satisfying. Make sure you try the mutton bara, grilled, marinated chops. Prices from start at 80 rupees for a half dish to 150 rupees for a whole one

Karim's has two branches, of which the original is a set of restaurants surrounding a little courtyard just off the road that leads from the south entrance to the Jama Masjid in Old Delhi. The other is in the Muslim enclave of Nizamuddin, in south Delhi
