    Lofoten Rorbuopplevelser

Posted by TravellingFrog 6 January 2011

We had a lovely stay here in June this year. The location is super convenient, with both Reine and Svolvær within easy reach of the rorbu, and plenty of opportunities for good hikes in the area (Stamsundsheia for great vistas for example). The rorbu itself is cosy, and features all mod cons. Plus the people who run the place are friendly and helpful, and make every effort to ensure your stay there is a pleasant one. They certainly did with us. We spent six nights there but could easily have spent a month! Thoroughly recommended :-)

    Gallery F15

Posted by TravellingFrog 6 January 2011

Interested in modern art? Gallery F15 in Moss, Østfold, is one of Norway’s most innovative contemporary art galleries, with temporary exhibitions covering anything from paintings to 3D installations, sculpture and concept art. The gallery is also home to Momentum, the Nordic festival of modern art, which is held here every other year. Housed in a former manor on Jeløya, with superb views of the Oslofjord and extensive grounds, it’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon. And if you’re in the mood, there are several paths leading into the nearby woods or following the shoreline. Cafe and gift shop onsite.

    Kumu Art Museum

Posted by TravellingFrog 6 January 2011

I was very impressed recently by this museum in Tallinn. Great modern architecture and an impressive modern art collection for such a small country. Little wonder it won the European Museum of the Year in 2008. Thoroughly recommended! :-)

A little bit of Denmark in America. Complete with a windmill, traditional Danish bakeries a plenty, a Hans Christian Andersen museum and even a replica of the Little Mermaid. Stay at the Viking Motel or Royal Copenhagen Inn, and gorge on over-sized Danish pastries for breakfast (well, this is America). Sample robust Danish fare such as frikadeller (meat balls), medisterpølse (sausages) and roedkaal (red cabbage) in one of the many restaurants (most of them done up as replicas of wooden Danish buildings), then indulge in a bit of shopping - you can get anything from Danish chocolate to Danish fashion, or even a pair of good old-fashioned wooden clogs, for half the price of what it would cost you back in Copenhagen!

Solvang was founded in 1911 by a group of Danish educators who travelled west to escape the harsh winters in the midwest. The town lies at the heart of wine country, and parts of the Oscar-winning film Sideways, about a couple of wine-loving friends travelling around California, was filmed here.

Best time to visit? September, when the hordes of tourists have left, and the Danish Days Festival (18 September 2010), now in its 73th year, is in full swing.

    Rival Hotel

Posted by TravellingFrog 17 January 2010

Quite simply Stockholm's sexiest hotel! Located on hip and trendy Södermalm, the funky Rival was the brainchild of ABBA singer Benny Andersson, who turned this former cinema into the most rock ’n roll place to stay in Stockholm. Excellent design and lighting, gorgeous staff, a bakery and cinema on site and a teddy bear to welcome guests in every single room. Cuddle up with your loved on your balcony and watch life go in the small park opposite the hotel, or mingle with other guests in the stunning art deco cocktail bar downstairs before heading for a night out on the town. Is the Rival romantic?? Well I certainly fell in love with it :-)
