I hired a car at J'burg airport and headed up to Kruger for a week self-driving around. A 2WD road car is fine even on the gravel tracks. Booking accommodation before going is recommended on the SAN web site.
I stayed at three different 'camps' from the south to the north to view a range of habitats. Self-driving gives you much more freedom to take photos (I recommend turning off the engine, taking a beanbag and 300mm+ lens to get sharp shots). The 'camp sites' offer guided bush walks which I highly recommend.
Four-hour drive from Johannesberg airport to the nearest entry gate.
Not just for vegetarians but anyone who likes genuine curry. It's a downbeat small place but great food. They spice the food up to your liking.
In the centre of Thamel district amongst all the tourist shops. Next to ABC Trekking/Baniya travel.
Don't miss the food and street entertainment on offer in the main square - Djemaa el Fna at night. Try the snails and spicy local aphrodisiac 'tea'.
I arrived by car and ended up in a Monte Carlo style rally on the narrow streets. Also there are few hotels in the centre with car parks.
Lots of nice mountain huts and chalets open to the end of Sept. Many marked trails next to glaciers, open alpine pasture and forest.
Lots of train connections to Interlaken from Geneva, Basal etc. Take a local train to Wilderswill, Gridevald etc.
Huge expanse of grassland with wildlife sightings at every corner. There are lots of local companies in Arusha who'll take you on a bone shaking 4x4 tour. A week is the minimum as there are lots of miles to cover.
Fly to Kilimanjaro international airport and stay in Arusha - about 45 minutes by road.
Look them directly in the eyes when you say 'No' - this puts them off everytime.
Only three hours by bus from Bangkok and a world away if you need to breathe clean air while waiting for visas etc. Lots of birds, gibbons, and elephants if you're lucky.
Three hours by air con public bus heading in the Korat direction.
Excellent photo opportunites and breakfast snacks. Try the hot soy milk.
This is a 6,100m high trekking peak close to Leh. Hire a local guide and horses to make the approach a bit easier. Fantastic views to the Karakoram, including K2.
Leh, Ladakh
