    Inn On Castro

Posted by bearandlion 9 November 2011

Stayed here recently on a trip to San Francisco and can't recommend it highly enough (actually booked it because of reading about it in these tips!)
Beautiful room, fabulous host, AMAZING breakfast, good wifi, voip phone in the room, and excellent location in a great area and right near lots of public transport. I doubt there is a better place to stay in the city. I will definitely be going back.

We stayed in this apartment during a recent trip to Italy and wished we had been able to stay longer. It's in a lovely little village called Loro Ciuffenna and is a perfect base for anyone wanting to live the Tuscan experience. Best for longer stays (a week or more) and for people who have access to a car to be able to get around to all the fabulous tiny places that nobody gets to see. Run by an American woman, Barbara (she lives in the apartment below), who took such wonderful care of us and knew all the best places to see and things to do. Fabulous hiking and nature experiences if you tire of all the antiquity. Generally, just a wonderful place to recharge the batteries and forget the world for a little while.

    Hotel de la Gare, Hendaye

Posted by bearandlion 24 January 2009

Here we are, stuck in Hendaye because of a storm and this sweet little hotel has come to our rescue. Wonderful people, comfortable rooms and Hendaye is a really sweet little place. Rooms are 50, 60, and 75 euros for one, two, and three people respectively. We are super lucky to have found this place and would definitely recommend it for a longer visit.

    El Arco Artesano

Posted by bearandlion 22 January 2009

If you're looking for gifts or souvenirs which are uniquely spanish but not tacky or generic you must visit El Arco Artesano on the Plaza Mayor. A whole range of prices and everything beautiful, handmade and local. I got myself a gift of some earrings and a beautiful scarf; a perfect reminder of this place with out having to have "Spain" or "toro" written all over it. Lots of accessories, homewares, decorative items etc. Fantastic.

    Great vegetarian food

Posted by bearandlion 22 January 2009

Amazing vegetarian food. It's buffet style and you pay by weight. Not the cheapest place but the best, most delicious, and filling food that we have eaten on our whole trip. Right near the big three art museums. Highly recommended. 100grams of deliciousness for 2euros.

    The Beehive

Posted by bearandlion 12 January 2009

After staying in a fabulous place in Florence (see our other tip about Il Ghiro) we thought it couldn't get any better. How wrong we were. The Beehive is extraordinary. A beautiful, warm, clean, friendly hostel with free internet and the most incredible vegetarian cafe downstairs (you can also eat at the cafe if you are not a guest). We can't believe our luck and we are wishing we could stay in a place like this everywhere we go. By far, the best hostel possible. The term "hostel" doesn't remotely do it justice. It's home, in Rome.

    Rentego

Posted by bearandlion 9 January 2009

Rentego let out small and large apartments around Prague for visitors. We stayed in one of their smallest (Mala) and had a lovely time. It was modest but clean and tidy and had everything we needed for a good, self-catered holiday. When you're hardly in your room anyway, there really is no point blowing out on the hotel and this place was budget but very nice.

    Palle D'Oro

Posted by bearandlion 9 January 2009

Fantastic little restaurant running since 1860 (the whole time with the same family). We had a delicious meal there (pastas around seven euros, salads four, desserts four) and thoroughly enjoyed both the delicious food and the great service and ambience. Highly reccommended.

    Il Ghiro

Posted by bearandlion 9 January 2009

Il Ghiro is a wonderful little guesthouse situated very centrally, near the main train station in Florence. It is absolutely fantastic. Reasonably priced, clean, great staff, free web access (and that is a real gift here in Italy) and lots of help available finding anything you want to see, great places to eat etc. Run by Francesco and Paula; we have only met Francesco but he is fantastic (and so is Paula, if the recommendations on the wall are anything to go by). Best place yet. Stay here!
