    Pere Lachaise Cemetery

Posted by brothersgrimm 31 May 2008

Before entering the cemetery I strongly recommend either buying a guide, or photographing the map in the entrance (assuming your camera has a good LCD screen with zoom), because the layout sometimes defies logic, and you'll struggle to find such folk as Jim Morrison.

Whilst there, females looking to get pregnant might want to track down the tomb of Victor Noir (Yvan Salman), and rub his protruding trousers (just make sure you're not spotted by the authorities), or apply lipstick and kiss the already plastered tomb of Oscar Wilde.

Boulogne is right on the edge of the 'true' Paris, bordering the 16th arrondissement. It's very easy to reach by the usual Paris buses and trains, and offers a welcome escape from the usual city noise and masses. It's in a nice trouble-free area, where you can relax on grass fields. There are sightings of kingfishers, and in one of the ponds live terrapins and coypu, which is fun for both adults and children.

The Buttes Chaumont park is slightly different to other parks in Paris, in that it was built on a former quarry and, as such, has some interesting hilly views across Paris, alongside an artificial cave complete with stalactites and waterfall.

In may not be exactly in Prague, but the All Saint's Chapel in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutna Hora, which has inspired John Connolly's The Black Angel and the film The Brothers Grimm, amongst others, can be reached from Prague's train station.

It's a 70km trip from Prague, in a warm and cosy train at a ridiculously cheap cost. Sedlec itself is an interesting place, and the ossuary in particular will leave a lasting impression with countless bones fashioned into works of art, including a chandelier which comprises of every bone in the human body! You may recognise it from books, documentaries, films or dvd's such as Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman's visit in their Long Way Round motorcycle world tour. Far more interesting than Paris' catacombes!
