    Go Greek in Shrewsbury

Posted by creteaholic 3 August 2009

An absolutely delightful Greek restaurant that you will find as you come out of Shrewsbury train station.

The food is is well priced, but not cheap, and is to die for. We went for the meze which is a selection of Greek and Cypriot dishes including wrapped vine leaves, stuffed aubergines and more.

The meat dishes are excellent and the meze is more than enough for two people with varying tastes.

Having been here a few times I would also say to try the Mousakka, Stifado and Sfoulaki.

The waiter is quick and helpful and the food comes quickly enough so you're not left waiting.

Also try the local beers like Mythos and Keo for your memories of Greece to come rushing back.

Opposite Shrewsbury Train station, just cross over the road and you will see it.

    Lindos in Rhodes

Posted by creteaholic 2 August 2009

The island of Rhodes has it all. I have recently returned from a wonderful holiday in Rhodes and stayed in the charming town of Lindos.

Firstly you have to visit Lindos, the people here are wonderfully friendly and welcoming, the beaches are stunning and although slightly overcrowded still very clean. The restaurants and Tavernas are top notch and my family and I spent most of our time eating in Nama and Acropolis.

If you want to do a bit of sightseeing, you have a few places to visit. Me and my wife went up to the Acropolis of Lindos; she got to ride a donkey up to the top, where as I was not allowed and had to walk or drag myself up there.

Once up to the Acropolis you can explore the ancient fortress and look through the excavations, but the views from the top of the hill are stunning.

We also went to Rodini Park, which is a strange nature reserve, typically Greek I suppose, and we also visited the valley of the butterflies which is a sight you can't miss.

The best time to visit Rhodes in my opinion would have to be in early Summer when the weather isn't too hot, or in early September. Also stick to the east side of the island, its much windier on the west side.

    Easter in Crete and Greece

Posted by creteaholic 26 March 2009

On April 28th 2009 you will be able to experience the Greek Easter celebrations. A Greek or a Cretan Easter is nothing like our own and involves a lot more than giving chocolate eggs.

Families give and receive red eggs, dyed red to represent the blood of Christ. During the day families and friends get together to have a huge BBQ and usually spit roast a pig or lamb and break Easter bread, cooked for generations by a recipe handed down from mother to daughter.

At night you will see great firework celebrations and bonfires, and the little villages go mad for a night. If you book a nice family hotel or know a Greek family you will of course get dragged along to the celebrations and I can tell you it’s wonderful, I got given a handful of firecrackers and was told just to go mad.

You really have to visit Crete at this time, and after spending the past 4 Easter's in Malia I can heartily recommend seeing this town at its traditional best, this is of course before Malia becomes the hectic and debauched party town it’s known for in the summer months.
