    Big Apple Greeter

Posted by derekelton 3 December 2007

Big Apple Greeter is a voluntary organisation which was set up to give visitors to NYC a personal insight into the Big Apple.

A Greeter meets you at your hotel and you get an hour's walking tour of your chosen neighbourhood, and it is all free. You even get a subway pass for the day. We had a great time. Check the websites for details.

    Evergreen Lodge, Yosemite

Posted by derekelton 2 December 2007

If you fancy a stay in a "log cabin in the woods for city slickers" then Evergreen Lodge is for you. It's in the forest area just outside the park and close to "Hetch Hetchy" gate on the west side of Yosemite and is a well laid-out complex of very comfortable accommodation with a central restaurant/bar/shop.

The prices are very reasonable and for Brits, with the exchange rate as it is, well, say no more. There is, of course, the whole of Yosemite to go at.

    Pasta Moon, Half Moon Bay

Posted by derekelton 2 December 2007

Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay, which is on Hwy 1 just a short drive from San Francisco, serves some of the best Italian food to be had anywhere.

It is not cheap but for Brits with the exchange rate as it is now, it is very inexpensive. Go for the seafood/fishy options. Seafood risotto is superb.

I could go on and on, but if you appreciate great Italian cooking - GO THERE! It made a great start to our Pacific Coast Hwy trip.

    Highway 1 Pacific Coast Highway

Posted by derekelton 2 December 2007

A great scenic drive. I recommend heading south on the ocean side. Allow LOTS OF TIME. We took a week from San Francisco to LA and we could have taken a year. There are lots of very good and cheap motels along the way so no need to bother about booking ahead.

Just make EARLY STARTS and make the stopovers by mid afternoon for the best choices. We never spent as much as $100 per double per night including breakfast and inclusive of all taxes for often quite luxurious accommodation. Driving in USA can be a pleasure rather than a chore and on Hwy 1 very few people are in a hurry.

Check www.broadjam.com/delton and listen to "Looking For America - Land Of The Free" for the full story.

    Radio City Apartments

Posted by derekelton 1 December 2007

Radio City Apartments is an apartment hotel in the heart of the theatre district close to Times Square and 5th Ave.

It is excellent value for money. We paid $200 per night for a one bedroom apartment which comfortably took our family of four. Friendly, helpful young staff and clean and comfortable accomodation.

Big Apple Greeter is a voluntary organisation which was set up to give visitors to NYC a personal insight into The Big Apple. A Greeter meets up at your hotel and you get a five or so hour WALKING tour of your chosen neighbourhood, and it is all FREE. You even get a subway pass for the day. We had a great time. Check the websites for both for all the details.
