Tivoli is a huge funfair on Djurgarden island, opposite the main Skansen entrance, with great views across to Gamla Stan and Sodermalm. The entry prices are a bit cheeky, as you pay to get in, only to find everything costs extra. If you have a Stockholm or Tourist card, however, initial entry is free. #
Tivoli isn't a particularly classy, or clean establishemnt but it makes for an exciting end to a Djurgarden day trip - a 180kr evening wristband gets you on all the decent rides between 7pm and midnight, when the park empties out and queues are short. Go on half a dozen rides, in particular the impressive Jetline, and it's value for money.
Get to Djurgarden via the 44 and 47 buses from Sergel Torg, the No. 7 tram from Ostermalm, or the ferry from Slussen. All journeys are free with the 72hr Tourist Card.
A compact suburb just east of the Old Town, Uzupis has all the charm of the city centre without the crowds. A former working-class area now occupied by artists and writers, who proclaimed the district a republic in 1998, Uzupis is a great place to stroll through on a summer evening.
Highlight of the area is Tores, an initially unremarkable hilltop restaurant with an unbelievable view of the Old Town from its secluded terrace.
Head out of the Old Town past St. Ann's Church and cross the Vilnius river - you should see signs informing you of your arrival in the Republic. Tores restaurant is on Uzopio gatve, a 5 minute walk uphill from the central angel statue.
Wonderful though Stockholm is, it's hardly a haven for budget travellers, and getting on the internet (often a necessity for advance booking into crowded hostels) can be indecently expensive. The Seven-Eleven shops offer a solution - 90 minutes online time for 29kr, and you can use it in separate stints.
This service was available in stores near Gamla Stan tube station and Centralstation, but not at the waterfront store in Ostermalm.
