Electrical outages are extremely common in Trinidad, as throughout Cuba, and if you are staying in a casa particular (as opposed to hotels with emergency generators) you might find it hard to see your way home. Or anything at all.
It's just got to be done! Massive statue and plaza in the town where Guevara led a decisive battle in the Cuban revolution. His remains are also interred here.
On the edge of town near the bus station. Walkable.
All the deep joy of karaoke without having to get up in public or inflict your singing on the rest of the pub. You get your own little room, machine, and a couple of mikes. Not cheap (about £25 an hour all in), you have to book ahead and it can feel a little grubby. But worth it.

This is one of those great places that you think you've just discovered and then find every other visitor knows it. You get live music in a cool cavernous setting. Plenty of locals seem to go there too. Easily missed - just a small door in the wall and not much to advertise it. Especially good to hear a bit of flamenco, with some authentically gurning singers. Free entry.
Calle Levies - in the Barrio S Cruz. Best to ask someone
A great vegetarian restaurant - not something easy to find anywhere, let alone France.
There's no menu, just whatever they bring you - usually five courses, strictly veggie. No hard choices! And good value too.
Probably need to book ahead for evenings.

Barely out of the crowds of Princes Street, this peaceful spot is blustery enough to chill your bones at times, but is a great bit of greenery with great views of the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh city centre, and some weird architecture to puzzle over.
Calton Hill, central, near the North Bridge.
Old music hall-style cabaret from transvestites. A hoot.
Just back from the promenade - Dickson Road.
Cars through the ages. Not to mention great Soviet kitsch - look out for the waxwork of Breshnev in his crashed vehicle. In the suburbs of Riga, it's also handy for a walk in the neighbouring woods, by an abandoned race track.
Take a tram to the edge of town. www.muzeji.lv/guide/pages_e/motor.html
This hotel is distinctive for having original art dominating every room. Not necessarily always a great thing -the painting in mine was a rather unattractive grey scrawl - but a good schtick to liven up an otherwise basic 3-star hotel. Tiny bathrooms. Quite near the centre - a five-minute walk to the Grand Place.

An amusement park, with all the fun of the fair and none of the associated gang violence (at least, it didn't feel that way). Lots of rollercoasters. You can also win enormous bars of Marabou, the world's best chocolate.
This is a French/modern European restaurant in Stoke Newington. It's bit pricier in the evenings but nice, and the do a good-value lunch.
