    Gibb's Farm

    Posted by dwh23 4 February 2008

    Colonial era coffee estate farm set in delightful gardens on edge of Ngorogoro crater. Recommended for its kitchen garden, working farm, setting and stylish accommodation. Go for the new rooms with outdoor showers and verandahs. The food is a cut above.

    So lovely you'll probably want two nights - at the Manyara/Ngorogoro stage of your Northern Circuit safari.

    Chumbe Island

    Posted by dwh23 4 February 2008

    Small ecological island reserve 40 minutes off Zanzibar. Only 14 tourists at any time, staying in romantic beach bandas stylishly constructed from natural materials.

    One of the finest beaches on Zanzibar, the best food I sampled and superlative nature trails in the mangrove forest and over best coral in east Africa. Relatively expensive but a must for any holiday, particularly a honeymoon.

    Kamenice

    Perfect al fresco budget seafood. Try the fried squid, the black cuttlefish risotto or 'little fish' on one of Dubrovnik's best squares. The only trick is beating the cut-throat scramble for tables. An orderly queue is a northern European concept.

    Felix in Palermo Vieja

    Posted by dwh23 28 October 2005

    Perhaps you fancy a trip to a Paul Smith style men's shop (full of old tin toys and swinging London/indie paraphenalia) and a new wardrobe for £150? The stuff on sale in Felix is great quality and WILL be commented upon back home ... my stripey scarf is remarked upon by many a female - great purchase.

    The Nacional and Hotel Inglaterra

    Posted by dwh23 28 October 2005

    The Nacional - where else would one stay? The perfectly concocted mojito served on the terrace with the warm breeze off the Gulf of Mexico was a travel moment to savour. Also Hotel Ingleterra is a safe, central bet. Unlike most places in Havana it has the merit of not being on the Ernest Hemingway circuit.

    Both in central Havana;

    Park Hyatt

    Posted by dwh23 28 October 2005

    Seen Lost in Translation? You can sample it for yourself. Try the good value eat-all-you can brunch in the stylish dining room floating above the skyscrapers. Service, as always in Japan, is flawless.
