Though this area near to the US army base has been called a special tourist zone and is praised for it's international shops, it's really the place where sellers try and hawk tacky Korean gifts and American clothes to the (mostly) American tourists. There are many other markets which are more representative of Seoul and are pretty much only frequented by locals.
The myth that Tokyo is expensive is shattered here. This extensive chain of fast food resturants is cheap and filling but authentically Japanese. The dishes are rice based with different toppings (beef, chicken etc) served with oinions and pickel. Price of the meal usally includes a serving of green tea, the total cost being around 350-450Yen (2003 prices). Pictures of the food on the placemats also help in the ease of ordering for non-Japanese speakers.

Tokyo has a thriving music scene so why not take the chance to see some local bands live? Guilty is one such venue, tucked away in a side street in Ebisu. It's relatively small (capacity approx 150-200) and is friendly enough to strangers. Most of the bands which perform there tend to be of the rock/pop genre, some of which could well destined to bigger things. It also gives you the chance to hear Japanese music beyond Jpop. Entry fees vary but are not excesive and often include the price of the first drink.
