    Public transport in Bilbao

Posted by jburke 3 November 2011

All public transport in Bilbao is very cheap, clean and regular.
The bus from the airport runs every 30 minutes, costs 1.30 euros to the bus station (termibus) and you pay on the bus. It will cost you between 25-30 euros in a taxi.
On the regular buses you can get single or return tickets which you purchase from the individual bus stops. Tickets have to be validated there before you get on the bus. It's easy to understand after the first go.
On the metro it is exactly the same, the machines have all the destinations and it is a touch screen process in various languages. The longest trip we could take on the metro only cost 3.40 euros return. Tickets have to be validated at the same machines.
You can purchase a Bilbao Card from various places which covers all public transport in Bilbao itself but you will need to pay more for trips further out. The cards can be bought for a single day but there are other time periods.

This is a place about 5km outside the Carcassonne - takes about 25 minutes on the number 1 bus from the Bastide among other places in the city and costs E1.20 eachway. It is a lake/reservoir with a beach and the opportunity to go swimming. There are walks around the lake (a circuit took us about one hour 15 minutes) and pathways leading off. We went late October and the weather was wonderfully warm and it would have been ideal for a picnic especially as there were no facilities available but nevertheless it was one of the highlights of our trip to Carcassonne. If using the bus check the times of the return journeys because they are irregular and be aware that the bus may not follow the same route once it is back in the city.

S1 bus tours the main areas of the city, the waterfront (Pier Head/Albert Dock/King's Arena), the two cathedrals, the university and links up with the main transport centres in the city.

Buy an Arriva Day Ticket (£3 at present) on the bus and you can hop on and off at the places you really like and you can then use your ticket on any other of the Arriva services around the city. A Saveaway ticket bought from numerous outlets can be used at off-peak times.

Numerous stops around the city but notably Queen Square/Pier Head/King's Arena/Hope Street/Lime Street.
