    Inca Kola

    Posted by jodyq1 19 August 2007

For days I wondered why the locals were rarely seen without a bottle of this luminous yellow beverage in hand. I decided to try it, and drank it constantly for the rest of my trip. If only they'd import it here!

In practically every shop and bar.

    Coca tea

At that altitude, you may need the local brew, and not Cusquena!

Eating small meals and drinking little alcohol will help too - I learned the latter the hard way.

    Elvis-a-rama museum

    Posted by jodyq1 14 December 2006

A fantastic little museum with a wealth of Elvis related memorabilia, a decent tribute singer, great gift shop and maybe the chance to meet and chat to some of his former friends and acquaintances!
Sadly this gem is a bit run down and undersold in big-casino-fixated Vegas and lies in a tatty building off the strip, easiest accessed from behind Fashion show mall, but it is unmissable, great value and worth the effort for all King fans.

    Barneys Beanery

    Posted by jodyq1 21 September 2006

With 2 branches in L.A. (the original in west L.A. on the old Route 66 and a more recent addition in Santa Monica) this is a fine place for a few beers from an enjoyably broad beer menu featuring brews from all over the world. There's no need to go for the usual U.K. available labels so try a nice Fat Tire or Anchor Steam instead, and add a fabulous calzone or chilli bowl from their equally long food menu. Shoot some pool, play the jukebox or look at the tabletops which are full of showbiz memorabilia and great old celebrity pictures.

    Broadway Deli

    Posted by jodyq1 21 September 2006

A great people watching location and fine food recommend this Santa Monica restaurant (it's not a Deli in the old New York tradition) among their American classics is one of the best tuna melts you'll ever have the pleasure of eating.
Lovely own brew ale as well as great prices and very efficient service, but gets busy on weekends.

    Corner of Broadway and 3rd St,Sant Monica,CA.

    The Georgian

    Posted by jodyq1 21 September 2006

A wonderful seafront hotel in beautiful Santa Monica, the Georgian is, on the outside, a powder blue art-deco classic, while on the inside the rooms are modern and stylish but with the old-world feel of the hotel preserved. Enjoy a drink at sunset at the hotelfront veranda bar and watch the world go by in style.

    Amoeba Records

    Posted by jodyq1 21 September 2006

Possibly the world's best record store, this place has hundreds of thousands of records, CDs, posters and more, new and used, and I have spent many hours sifting through the endless aisles of every genre, picking up obscurities, bargains and the general good vibe of the store.

    Mel's Drive in

    Posted by jodyq1 21 September 2006

This is a small California chain serving up excellent (and massive!) burgers, delicious sandwiches and the best milkshakes you will ever taste.

The Sunset Boulevard branch is the best location, near the Sunset Strip and with a lovely outside eating area. Try their fantastic strawberry shortcake too.
