    Hammariku park

Posted by jonw 30 October 2005

After you've amused yourself with the bizarre architecture and shopping malls of Odaiba, get the ferry across Tokyo Bay to Hammariku park (entry included in the ticket bought in Odaiba) and enjoy a relaxing stroll around the peaceful Japanese gardens.

South of Shimbashi metro station, a 10-15 minute walk from Ginza.

    Roppongi Hills

Posted by jonw 30 October 2005

For an unparalleled view of Tokyo try the Mori building at Roppongi Hills. Unlike the Metropolitan Building it costs 1,500 yen but it's bang in the centre so the views are much better. Included in the price is the art gallery, which puts on some wacky shows.

Exit Roppongi station, turn right and it's the first enormous building you see on the left, maybe 300 metres away.

    No. 109 (reluctantly)

Posted by jonw 29 October 2005

No. 109 is a rocket ship shaped spiral of hell that doubles for a mass of girly clothes and accessory shops replete with staggering kitsch and the incessant shriek of teenagers replete with barking megaphones. My friend's girlfriend loves the place but after 5 minutes I ran out screaming into the slightly less insane mass at Shibuya. Truly surreal and very scary.

Come out of Shibuya Hachiko plaza exit, go forward and bare left at the crossing and you'll see the spaceship on the left. Be careful.

    Tokyo Dome hotel buffet

Posted by jonw 29 October 2005

The hotel provides delightful daily buffets for about 3,000 yen (15 quid to you) and you get to munch through Japanese and European dishes (including an amazing seafood curry) along with a worryingly wide selection of desserts. Plan to stay 12-3pm for a real test of character. Do not then get smart and go on the nearby rollercoaster but head for the gorgeously sedate Koishikawa park nearby in a desperate attempt to shrug off the undeniable excessive indulgence. Also recommended is the buffet at the Hotel Edmundo for a slightly cheaper blowout.

Tokyo Dome is near to Korakuen metro station. The Edmundo is near Iidabashi metro station.
