If you want an easy way to get Latvian Lats and don't want to be bothered with airport exchange bureau or cash machines abroad, then pop into your local Post Office and purchase them there, they will also buy back any unused Lats on your return.
Superb, coffee house, come bar, come restaurant. It reminds you of a smaller version of the municipal house cafe in Prague. The decoration is opulent and the place is very sophisticated. If you can get a seat in the window it's a great place to people watch, whilst relaxing over a coffee and Jack Daniels as it looks out over the Livu Laukums square, which in winter has an outdoor ice rink, which adds to the ambience.

The Dickens pub is an authentic British pub in the heart of Riga's old town. I know people go abroad for the local culture and not what's on offer back home, but this place is so unexpected it's worth a visit. When you step through the door you could be anywhere in the UK, the pub has been done out really well and is not at all like a theme park product. It also has one of the most extensive selection of beers available in the Latvian capital.

Superb hotel in the centre of Riga in an excellent location on the edge of the old town. The hotel is perfectly located for nightlife as most of the liveliest spots are within five minutes walk. The hotel is a little on the expensive side with rooms priced at 100 Lats, but the location more than makes up for it with the freedom monument on the hotel doorstep
