Evora is a beautiful medieval town in the much undervalued Alentejo region. It has ancient walls, narrow windy streets, oodles of character and enough sights to keep you delving into it's history for at least a day. Worth seeing on a laid back stroll round the streets are the Aqueduto da Agua de Prate (aquaduct of Silver Water), the creepy and strangely calming Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones, yes real bones) and 2nd or 3rd century Roman Temple which is reminiscent of a mini Parthenon. Outside of town are several stone megaliths which you are likely to have to yourself. It's all an excellent opportunity to practise your Portuguese and you won't hear many English voices. Fabulous!
