    Shanxi

A fantastic restaurant located next to the Phoenix Hostel on Yunnan Street in central Shanghai. There is a wonderful array of local and Chinese provincial specialities on offer including Hunnan style pork buns and lamb and shrimp dim sum. All are utterly cheap in price as well as being exquisite in taste. Definitely worth a visit if you get a chance.

    Pankoo

This was my first taste of Korean Barbeque, and my friend, a native Korean, mentioned that this was one of the finest places in Shanghai. My friend couldn't have been more right, as the food served here was excellent and very light.

    Mamak

This Malaysian roti and satay establishment may have a queue forming outside from the moment it opens but it's worth the wait. The freshly made rotis and Malang styled curries are spicy, authentic and ultimately, delicious.

    Piccolo Bar

This cafe is hidden away on a leafy street in Kings Cross. The Italian owner, Vittorio, loves to chat and laugh along with the clientelle and the coffee is superb.

    Cafe Clem

Posted by krishym 1 January 2010

There's a hidden little cafe, located on the riverfront which is frequented by the locals. The coffee is deliciously syrupy and the view of the river is a delight, along with the unusual company of the resident chickens wandering by the tables.

    Nhi Nhi Hotel

Posted by krishym 27 December 2009

Although this hotel does not fall fully into the 'budget' criteria, nonetheless, it is an absolute steal. Located a short walk from the Old Town (ensuring that you don't get chewed up with the chaos and clamour of the rows of tailor shops and tourists), the hotel is a little haven for one to relax in. Complete with swimming pool, free wifi / internet access, splendid breakfast and airy rooms, I thoroughly recommend a visit. The staff are wonderful and genuine, and ensure that your stay is comfortable and that you have a thorough understanding of the town before you head out. Also, as a backpacker myself, I was amazed at the room, as my bed was even scattered with rose petals. Enjoy

    Mandalay Inn

Posted by krishym 25 December 2009

This hotel is located a short walk away from the clamour and frivolity of Pub Street and the Old Market. The rooms are wonderfully clean and spacious, while the decor is tasteful and elegant. The staff are wonderful. There is also the additional perks of free internet and unlimited use of wifi as well as use of the rooftop gym

This beautiful restaurant, with its airy courtyard and elegantly decorated interior, is by no means a secret. However, I urge you all to sample the wonderful array of very reasonably priced Vietnamese traditional meals on offer. There is even a chance to visit the food stalls where your authentic and delicious meals are prepared and cooked.

    Madame Cuc's

Posted by krishym 25 December 2009

The basics are executed very well here, from clean and bright rooms to the excellent location of all three of the Madame Cuc hotels in Pham Ngu Lao. The real bonuses are the use of free internet and wifi, breakfast, refreshing drinks and a simple dinner which are all included in the room rates. Madame Cuc's also appears to house the friendliest staff I have encountered to date, readily fussing over a hint of tiredness or lethargy with a Grandmother's care and attention.

    De Ja Vu

Wonderful little hidden bar, filled with expats, locals and NGO volunteers. There is a lovely little vibe here and they have live music on most nights from an endearing French singer. On Saturdays there is a $20 all you can drink and eat offer. Lots of fun and not the generic bar that you'd encounter in this bustling city.
