Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet. Glad to be the one. Annual tomato fight lasting about two hours. The last Wednesday of August. About 10.30 in the morning. Bring old clothes, a change of clothes and a disposable camera. That's all I can say. Just go.
In the town of Bunol, about an hour west of Valencia on the train. Just get yourself to the train station in Valencia early in the morning. Follow the crowds;

Upstairs bar with rooftop beer garden. Great atmosphere outside and in when it gets too chilly and everyone piles back in for the live music. Nice beers (pricey, but I'm sure you know that if you're in Norway) and friendly locals.
Gronland 18, not too far on foot from the central bus station;

An island in the Oslo fjord. The ferry is cheap, or free if you have one of the travel cards on offer, and it takes about half an hour. Some travel guides are in need of updating. There is no longer a campsite on the island so any listed phone number is obsolete. Anyone can go out on spec and pitch a tent - office parties, overnight school trips. Yet the island is big enough to get away from that if you want. Great place to chill out with a few beers or to do a bit of swimming in the summer. Hard to believe it's so close to the city
Catch the bus in the centre for Vipitengen Pier.
A mug of thick hot bitter chocolate served with churros (long fingers of deep fried dough). Pure indulgence. Lovely.
A local speciality I believe. To be found in most cafes and possibly tapas bars and pubs
Great pub with great music where you can dance into the small hours if you have the energy. If not, read the old copies of Melody Maker that line the walls. Class.
Calle Velarde
Big art gallery in central Madrid. Goya and Velasquez are good but Bosch steals the show for me. Very strange and very dark.
It's a cinema showing a good mix of oldies and international cinema. Great for a few hours away from shops and pubs [as is Arthur's Seat].
Lothian Road. Big thoroughfare off Princes' Street [opposite end to Waverley].
An Island in the Oslofjord. There used to be a camping site there (The Rough Guide 2002 gives a phone number but it no longer exists) but now you just catch the ferry out and do your own thing. It's safe as houses. Frequented by overnight school expeditions and work parties, it's still big enough to avoid them all and enjoy great views of Oslo and the surrounding hills. Plenty of tracks for walks as well. A nice break from the city which all feel the same after a while. Bring your own food and drink.
Catch the Vippitengen bus outside the train station. This brings you to the docks where you get the ferry. You can get a special city travel pass that covers all of this. It's fairly cheap for Norway.
