OK, this is my secret tip. Only for food and jazz lovers. Forget touristic places like Kantjil and the Tiger. This place is the real deal.

Very, very good Indonesian food.

The owner is an eccentric and the jazz is cool. It's super-small: there's only like five tables. But only for you I recommend it. Don't tell anyone else, otherwise I can't get in any more, because it's too full, you know? Just between you and me.

In the Utrechtsestraat. Tram 4 right through it, or tram 7 or 10 till Frederiksplein. Or metro till Waterlooplein and then walk some seven minutes.

This is a restaurant located in the Ferry Building. They serve great, great food.

Watch out for the dog, though. He is not dangerous, but the owners are not polite enough to keep the dog away from the communal table, which I think is weird.

You have a straight view on the Bay Bridge, which doesn't have the fame of the Golden Gate, but is still well worth looking at.

Right in the Ferry Building. Tons of trams and buses go there.

It's a really nice university town with some great coffee places, like the Java House and the Prairie Lights Bookshop which also has a small Java House, perfect for working on your laptop. The centre has a funny fountain which keeps children sweet for hours. There are some decent Indian place (like always, they are run by Sri Lankans) where you can have a lunch or dinner. The university library is huge, and you can easily spend days in it. It's always open, I think. I spent many nights there. America being a very Christian country, there are a lot of churches. I went a few times to First Mennonite Church of Iowa City and experienced a very warm atmosphere. When a good friend of mine died, they helped me to go through it. They are great.

Iowa City's airport is the one from Cedars Rapids. You can also take a Greyhound to Iowa City, f.i. from Chicago.
