In the recent flurry for Eurostar tickets to the Rugby World Cup final in Paris, return train tickets were costing hundreds of pounds.
My friends found that for half the price they could travel to Lille and then TGV onwards to Paris for considerably less. Although it's bit of a pain to change trains you can save a considerable amount.
Make sure you get your Indian visa as early as possible as the Indian embassy in London has recently been having difficulties in processing applications.
My friend had to take two days off work to get his visa in person. I think they're now taking postal applications again.

In recent years I've had 4-5 city breaks a year rather than two weeks on a beach.
I prefer to spend as little as possible on flights and then put what I saved towards a good hotel (I normally go for something that's very central).
directline-citybreaks.co.uk let me search for a hotel priced with either an easyjet or ryanair flight. I got £50 off for booking online (not too sure if they're still doing this). I've not found any other site that does this.
