    Solviksbadet

Posted by mcgee 19 April 2006

There are several beaches around Stockholm and the water is so clean that you can and should go for a swim in the summer. Solvik is located in the suburb of Bromma and is well worth the travel out of the city centre. It gets quite busy at the weekends but you can always find a spot. It is a proper sandy beach complete with two jetties, a cafe and a minuature golf course. My family always went here when I was a child and I still go in the summers.

T-Alvik then the Spårvagn to Smedslätten followed by a scenic 10-minute walk.

In summer, this is the perfect spot for grabbing a drink and watching people go by. I always go here when the weather is nice and stay for hours.

    Street market

Posted by mcgee 12 April 2006

This weekend market showcases local talent in textiles, jewellery and furniture and is full of quirky stuff. A large indoor cafe provides a welcome opportunity to rest your legs and just watch people go by.

    Gondolen

Posted by mcgee 12 April 2006

A very swanky bar which boasts a fantastic view over Stockholm. It is quite pricey and gets very busy in the evening, but go there for an afternoon drink and you can enjoy the magnificent view pretty much alone.

    Skansen zoo

Posted by mcgee 12 April 2006

An outdoor museum of Swedish traditional handicraft as well as a zoo where you can watch typical Scandinavian animals such as bears, lynx, wolves and elks. A great way to see them all is the guided feeding walk which starts every day at 14.00 by the wolverines. The Aquarium costs extra and houses exotic fish, snakes, spiders and other creepy crawlies. There is also a children's zoo of baby animals, and don't miss the bakery and glass-blowing cottage.

    Djurgården, bus 44 or 47 from T-Centralen.

    Tranan

Posted by mcgee 12 April 2006

Tranan serves old-fashioned, home-made meatballs with lingonberry jam and pickled cucumbers, at a very reasonable price. If they're not on the menu, just ask for them. After dinner you can go downstairs to the bar and enjoy cool music while rubbing shoulders with trendy media-types.

    Travel card

Posted by mcgee 12 April 2006

The easiest way to get around in Stockholm is to buy an SL travel card which provides unlimited travel on all tubes and buses (and even some boats!). A 3-day card costs approximately £13 and 7 days' travel will set you back about £16.
