    Using local currency

Posted by rebusrahman 31 July 2006

Although the US dollar is accepted everywhere (and preferred as it is stable) in Cambodia... make sure you keep Riel with you for small purchases.

It will often work out slightly cheaper to pay in Riel than in dollars (as they like to round things up in their favour).

You won't be saving that much relatively speaking but every little bit counts.

    Not bargaining for motos

Posted by rebusrahman 30 July 2006

The standard cost for a moto journey was 1500 riel in 2005.

Try not to pay more than 2000 riel for any single journey in the capital.

You can actually be quite hard nosed about it and say that you will not accept anything higher - as you know the going rate!

    Olympic Stadium

Posted by rebusrahman 31 July 2006

If you visit the Olympic Stadium (the venue for the '52 Games) then ask the reception/security person if you can see the seating area.

He should then let you go through into the stadium itself and you can wonder around and see the track firsthand.

    Free Internet

Posted by rebusrahman 31 July 2006

The public libraries in Helsinki offer free internet usage (asking that users only stay on for a maximum of 30 minutes).

It is possible to find free net consoles in some shopping centres. But the keyboard and interface is fiddly and a pain if you have to stand the whole time!

Abi Rahman was born in 1973 in the small city of Southampton.

After a typical atypical upbringing as an Anglo-Bangladeshi he graduated in 1997 with a BA Honours in English Literature and Theatre Arts from Goldsmiths College. He then spent the next five years or so trying to forge a career as an actor whilst supporting himself with a variety of temp jobs.

Abi has performed in a variety of media from film to theatre, TV to the net and across various genres such as Shakespeare and Beckett. Although a comedian at heart he prefers to take on serious roles - the real meat and gravitas ones - and especially bad guys... saying that it can be good to be bad.

In 2003, he made the decision to travel and backpacked his way across Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe for 2 years. Taking in 23 countries and savouring the sights and sounds these locales had to offer whilst meeting and befriending people from all walks of life.

He finally returned to the UK in 2006 older and (debatably) wiser.

He has spent most of his life writing, primarily creatively, for his own self-amusement as well as for various student publications and the odd website - which was pretty odd. Much of his work is postmodern fabulation but he has also turned his hand to reviewing (sport, music and film), opinionated articles and an online travel diary.

His interests include travel, acting, writing, music, literature, sport, technology, cooking and having fun.

Currently, he is in absentia/dementia as he tries to fan a new fire from which to forge a future... although the embers of the others still smoulder in readiness to be rekindled.
