Villeneuve lez Avignon really should be visited by anyone intending to spend more than a day in Avignon. Some 10 minutes' drive to the other side of the Rhone is this superbly preserved late medieval village with great views across to the Palais des Papes.

Apart from the Chartreuse, fort, abbey gardens and village square, there's a great restaurant in a hotel next to the church. Very good food in menus costing around 70€.The sommelier is happy to recommend wines at anything from 20€ up.

Surely the best restaurant in Avignon. A couple of set menus at around 65€, including the famous tomatoes in every course, plus a 'surprise' menu for around 115€ - one of the highest quality meals I've ever eaten. An ideal place for a very special meal.

    La Mirande

Posted by rhadley 24 August 2007

An excellent restaurant, in a very upmarket hotel. High quality food, with two set menus apart from the à la carte.

Beware: the 33€ menu is only available at lunch (and then not on what has been charmingly mistranslated as 'off days', ie public holidays). Otherwise, the menu costs 105€, but is well worth the price.

A delightful garden for eating outside, looking at the back of the Palais des Papes. Must book.

Nepalese restaurant: really interesting food. Another of the rare restaurants where you can have a short set menu for an excellent lunch or early evening meal for 20 Euros.

Lebanese restaurant with some interesting and different dishes. One of the relatively few places where you can get a quality early evening meal for less than 20 Euros - but it goes up a lot after 7pm.

Elegant well-restored Georgian building with Arts & Crafts murals and giant coat of arms in Rotunda, with some really good restaurants close by. Don't forget the official measurement outside on the wall.

A great guided tour (about 90 minutes). It's especially good for any younger people totally fed up with All Those Big Museums. You are taken round parts of the Doge's Palace that are usually off limits (you must book in advance and preferably do so direct with the booking office to avoid possible unhappiness) and get to learn lots of wonderful facts about secret passages, the palace, Casanova and the power that was Venice. A real joy for all ages.

    Renting a flat

Posted by rhadley 4 April 2006

Hotel accommodation for two adults and two teenagers is ridiculously expensive - even during October/November, which is a wonderful time to go. Through Rome Sweet Home (sic) we found a flat with a large bedroom, two small rooms and a balcony over a canal just round the corner from the wonderful Campo San Marco in Dorsoduro for 170 euros per night. It was all exactly as promised on the website.

Only a few minutes from Rialto Bridge it must be hard to find better value in this area. A garden that must be lovely in sunny weather and a very lively trattoria. On a damp Sunday the very friendly staff were almost overwhelmed with diners but kept it all going well. Quite a wide choice of pizzas (all around 8 Euros) and an extremely good value for money set lunch for either 14 or 16 Euros. It's all the traditional courses that you would expect (spaghetti al ragu, brescaiola, spaghetti with mussels and clams, squid) but each course cooked well and very tasty. Half a litre of good wine for 8 Euros. Unhesitatingly recommended - and as almost always in Venice restaurants, perfect for children too.

    Ristorante Giorgione

Posted by rhadley 12 November 2005

A really good honest and simple restaurant in one of Venice's most interesting out-of-the-way areas down near Giardini. We were given a warm welcome and enjoyed everything about our lunch. A set meal of this quality for 14 Euros is really a rare event in Venice. On the set menu there's either 'fish' (spaghetti al vongole followed by fritura) or 'meat' (spaghetti al pomodoro with veal as the main course). It's a genuine, very large plateful and extremely well-cooked and tasty. Half a litre of wine costs only 5 Euros. At the end they added on 12% for service - exceptionally, I wasn't bothered to check back whether it was mentioned on the menu because it had been such an enjoyable meal. A warm recommendation for both the restaurant and the area if you're in Venice for more than a couple of days.
