Because it's frustrating, annoying, funny, challenging, embarassing and satisfying all at the same time. You are guaranteed comedy, even when you can't row and your lovely lovely is laughing at you banging into punts and other rowers or thinking of ways to sink American and Italian tourists who have no river etiquette. A great, great day out.

Sit on the beach and look at the sun setting - (my favoured spot is in between the two piers, looking just over the burnt out one ...) call me a freak but if it's a good day for weather - you could almost be anywhere in the world.

There are a million and one bicycle rental stores. It costs next to nothing, and is easily the best way to see Amsterdam. A world-class, cycle-friendly system - it's an enjoyable way of seeing this unique city without having to spend your day in coffee shops or gawping at the ladies of the night.
Central train station and just about anywhere...
If you've got a car and need to go along the N98 road towards Nice - try and aim to arrive for dusk. The place looks absolutely magical from there at that time.
Jericho is an area just a brief walk from Oxford, but feels a million miles away - great shops (especially the antique places, and charity shops) a few bar's (Branca - they serve menabrea beer which is one of the world's best), fish restuarants, bookshops, deli's, cafe's and of course the Jericho pub AND a cinema - independent of course.
All you need is a Tom Baker scarf and a bike and you'll fit it. Great place to have a wander and see what Oxford life is like...
Jericho, Oxford.
The Tate Liverpool is a nice intimate museum with a few gems of modern art, and depending in the exhibition and it offers something different to the Tate in that there London. Early or late midweek is the best time to enjoy it, as it's quiet and not so many tourists... if you go late, have a cocktail or two at Baby Cream just across the way... c'est tres tres disco chic.

The Picturedrome is just a cool pub. It has a cinema in its backroom. I mean a massive full sized cinema screen, and a bar and comfortable sofas... always a nice vibe there - often have live music, and the JTQ (James Taylor Quartet) are regulars. Food isn't bad at all. A great venue for a small market town.

Well, it's a museum housed in a former synagogue and is one of the tallest buildings in Turin. BUT, the actual museum is pretty average, verging on poor. However, you need to go in the glass lift (yes GLASS) to the tower where you get some stunning views of Turin. Worth the entrance fee, and if you are a fan of fake Darth Vader masks, then you'll get a Brucie Bonus too...
Mole Antonelliana Via Montebello, 20 - Torino
It was once my local pub. I was born and bred in London Fields, and this was a beacon of the community: good beer, a boules pit in the back garden and, during the summer, local cricket or football. Someone generally has a guitar or sings a song and people listen while chilling on the grass.
It was an intimate, friendly place - it's lost its intimacy because it's more popular now, but its still a great place for a summer day's relaxing. Take a picnic...

Venice's only 'vegetarian' restuarant ... but it serves meat dishes (??). It's small, tucked well away from the madding crowd of the general tourist hullaballoo - a 20-minute "easily getting lost" walk from the Basillica. It has a fantastic atmosphere, great food and good prices. The menu's in Italian and you'll need to ring to make a reservation. Try and get a table outside.
I went with a group of friends, and we enjoyed our three-course meal so much, we ordered another two courses each...

Once you take the Star Ferry from the main port, you (a) get THE most fantastic view of Hong Kong (aim to come back at night - and get your camera ready), and (b) realise how small the place is. Once you get on Lantau, take the bus to Po Lin. You get to see a snapshot of real life on the island, which is amazing, and then once you get to the monastery AND that seated Buddha - well it's awe inspiring.
I went for a meal at the 'worst looking' but tastiest restuarant on the island, about a ten-minute hike from Po Lin (avoid the large dogs). The food was good, as I was starving.
Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island
A great gig venue. It's small and intimate with people just dancing round, smiling and having fun. There's lots of atmosphere. I saw Femi Kuti there last November. It was an amazing show, with fantastic supporting act, the friendliest staff ever and such a wide mix of ages for a concert. A great gig in a great venue.
Lijnbaansgracht ...
After a 30-minute train ride out of Central Station, through suburbia and into what appears to a one-way mission to getting lost, the Louisiana Museum is will worth the visit. A fantastic building, nestled on the coast, and inside - Picasso, Warhol, (Danish ..he he) Bacon and a variety of gems of modern art. Once you've had your fill of art, wander outside to the nearby grounds and beaches. It's a beautiful and intimate setting, with treats like Henry Moore sculptures and amazing views as a background ... I loved it!
Arguably one of the world's most famous opera houses. On its busiest night, I decided to gamble and walk in ten minutes after the start of the Saturday 7pm performance of (...I honestly can't remember, but it featured a nun who had renounced her vow of celibacy and was sung in German...).
I asked, using my basic French vocabulary for the cheapest ticket available. Three minutes later, I was in the 'Gods', in a packed Bastille, watching opera with Paris glitteraty ... for €5, yes FIVE EUROS. It was fantastic. I recommend anyone gambles!
