Fantastic 50s formica fantasy - a real classic ice cream parlour and a national treasure. Oh, and the ice cream is fantastic! If you can't make it to Broadstairs, apparently they sell it in Harrods...
Up in the main cluster of shops across from the Victorian promenade - you can't miss it!
NZ does a fine trade in 'shark and taties', but this shop, on the main road, right beside the supermarket is a cut above the rest (or was a year ago) - fresh, cooked to order, tasty fish... a great stop off on your way up or down the Coromandel Peninsula.
Main street of Tairua (which isn't hard to find as it's the only main street), right by the supermarket - well, mini-market, really.
The Swedish dish of fermented herring isn't to everyone's taste, mainly due to the horrendous smell of it, but it's worth a try. You eat it on flatbread with chopped onions and cold boiled potato (almond potatoes) and sometimes a kind of fermented milk, a bit like creme fraiche. An acquired taste but worth risking.
Usually served in summer at outdoor cafes.
Situated in the basement of one of Madurai's larger hotels, this bar is definitely worth checking out. It's got Logan's Run-style space-age decor, which will make you feel just like you're in outer space...because it's so weird.
Tamil Nadu's not big on licensed premises, so the locals (invariably male) tend to nurse a soft drink and watch the tourists, but it's a fun place (if a bit loud when the sound system cranks up). And they give you yummy bar snacks with every drink!
In the basement of the Hotel Supreme, 110 West Perumal Maistry Street, Madurai.
