    Bliss Cafe

Posted by thelmalives 20 May 2013

A superb vegan restaurant in hipster Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Very close to the L train so it's about a 10 minute journey from Manhattan's Union Square and then you can walk down Bedford Avenue past thrift stores, bookshops, boutiques etc. The food is amazing! I had a jackfruit burger which was just the same texture as pulled pork, marinated in a delicious sauce with sweet potato fries. Or you can go for much healthier stuff - steamed greens, seaweed, tempeh, the works. Our server was super nice and welcomed us back when we went in again a couple days later. I really do recommend this place.

    Day of the Dead

Posted by thelmalives 1 October 2012

OK fine you could go to Mexico City for day of the Dead and I imagine it would be insane. But San Francisco with it's vibrant Mission District puts on an amazing show. Garfield Park is filled with altars made by the community, there's a walking procession, music, dancing and a lot of dressing up. Grab some amazing Mexican food at Gracias Madre on MIssion Street and go get involved.
San Francisco itself is a great city in autumn - mainly because it's no different to summer. The fog still rolls in, you still need a jumper, but there are less tourists and the colours are beautiful. The sun here just seems softer.

    La Rusticana

Posted by thelmalives 15 March 2010

It's actually in Argentiere, up the valley towards La Tour and from what I can tell, used to be a bit of a dive. But it's been totally overhauled by it's new owners and is rad! Lively with a great menu - the Indonesian pork was lush and a plain spaghetti, tomato and basil was really delicious. There is a back area with a big oak table and blackboards with the daily specials written in chalk. Not overtly English but not all tartiflette and chalet-style either. Worth checking out.

    Mullacott stables

Posted by thelmalives 6 May 2009

I'm not a great horse rider but there's something about the activity which inspires my romantic notions. While on holiday in Woolacombe I booked some riding lessons with Hannah (based along the coast in Ilfracombe) and she got me riding confidently within a few hours. I joined a group for a beach ride later on in the week and while it wasn't exactly the scene out of the Black Stallion film when he gallops bareback through the surf but it was close enough for me.
I'll never be a dressage queen but Hannah has got me to a level where I can ride ok and will definitely be including as part of future trips.

    Cip Ciap pizzas

Posted by thelmalives 28 April 2009

Fab takeaway pizzas from this little shop on Calle Mondo Nuovo in Castello. I'm not a great fan of the food in Venice - pretty overpiced and not really very good - apart from a little fish restaurant I know ...
But Cip Ciap is great if you want a quick bite on the run. You can buy by the slice or a whole pizza. I totally recommend the calzone con prosciutto.
